hi amp alternator

Can a small body alternator running with an external regulator be replaced with a high amp alternator? I've got an '85/302FI that needs an alternator replacement so I thought why not? I'm getting ready to install some off-road lights and aftermarket headlights so I'm gonna need more power. What do I need to do?
