ok make it simple. 92 bronco fullsize. 302 5.0 automatic. 256000 miles. ran fine before this.

starts and idles and drives. but ticks and shakes. and blows white/blue smoke out the pipe and from behind the motor. there is oil coming out of the crack in my exhaust manifold. not from behind it but from inside it. rpm gauge reads normal. all gauges read normal. there is NO check engine light on. think light might be out. cant pull codes either. but i was driving up a hill in o.d. at about 3000 rpms and the speedometer starting surging from 68 to 70 back and forth then it started this at the top and i cant go more than 30 without it shaking bad. i aM not not sure it threw a rod bcuz it would be knocking and its not. no oil in antifreeze. no a.f in oil.

Still no reason it can't be a blown head gasket or a crack in the head. Oil doesn't *generally* leech out from the exhaust post unless there's a problem. Blue smoke is oil, white smoke is coolant & gray smoke is generally tranny fluid. Has it overheated recently ?

no nothing really wierd has been happeneing lately except for the fact that i was smelling gas in the truck for about a week after i filled it up. i rarely rarely fill her up. i mean yea sometime but rarly when i start it up it does idle bad and idle rough. but if i rev it up. no differenceonly when i drive it , thats when it corrects itself. i have no clue what it could be.

i just dont know why oil would be coming through the exhaust manifold on that one side. thats where the ticking noise and oil is coming from. coolant is not low. oil is not low. not mixing

I dunno what to suggest other than to remove the head & inspect it. Start by removing the valve cover, cleaning the top of the head as well as possible and then inspecting it. If nothing is found then I'd remove it to check more thoroughly. There simply *isn't* a path for oil to enter the exhaust post, even with a blown head gasket. I don't ever recall hearing about porosity issues with Ford heads, some of the A460 blocks yes, but not the heads (at least not that *I* ever heard of). By chance did the ticking start about the same time it began blowing smoke ? A cracked head isn't unheard of it's just that they usually crack when overheated and then leak coolant afterward.

If a rod were to have broken it is possible if it was in the right spot it could be sitting in the cylunder missing everything . This would account for the vibration . If this is the case you are very lucky because when a rod breaks its usually followed but alot of noise and a lot of very colorful language . The other senario may be that if a valve head were to break off and embed in the piston top then that would account for the ticking noise and it the cylinder is dead it will tend to draw oil up past the rings and this would account for the oil coming out the exhaust . You should also hear a dead thump in the exhaust from that cylinder and probably oil and smoke coming from the PCV line going to the air box . Best thing you can do now is do a comression test on that bank of cylinders where the oil is coming from if you find a 0 psi one youll know which one did it . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

well yes there is actually a wierd noise coming from the exhaust now that it didnt do before. i plan to tear it down in a couple days and look and see. if it threw a valve or rod ill just do a rebuild. needs it anyway with 265,000 miles on oroiginal 302.
