Okay so I have a very loud, very annoying squeek! The last week or so it started up.. in the morning when I start up for work, I let it idle for 10 minutes to warm it up. It'll squeek for about 3-5 minutes, not very loud but enough to hear. Then it'll go away and truck will purr like always.

Today however, the squeek was very loud and wouldn't go away. I sprayed random pully parts thinking maybe it was the belt (tested with a little water) then the actual pulley on each device with WD40. I moved the fan blade with my hand, to find my suspect.

So the peice that makes the noise is the shaft the fan spins on. With the truck off, I can spin just the blade (like normal I susppose) and the shaft/base doesn't move.

So what is this peice, or what part do I need to buy to fix this issue?? I assume the fan blade itself, bolts onto the thermal peice? And that thermal peice bolts onto the shaft, or comes with a new one? Thats how it kinda looks to me..

Thanks!

Sounds like fan clutch or maybe water pump.

With this vehicle, is the water pump connected to the fan?

I'm pretty sure it's the fan clutch. The fan itself makes the noise when you turn it by hand.. moves with ease, just sqeeks.

Problem is, not many websites have a fully picture so I don't want to buy the fan clutch, and not get the actual parts needed to fix the issue..

Adam your picture is the fan clutch. Might want to fork out the cash for the Ford replacement I have had issues with the other brands.

The easiest way to tell if your fan clutch is bad is to have two people. Turn the truck on and have someone watch the fan. Shut the truck off. If the fan spins more that 3-4 times max after the truck is shut off then it is toast.

The extender piece you have shown in the picture is just that. It is just an extension of the water pump pulley to keep the fan away from the engine and further into the shroud. If iny thing is squeaking it is the fan clutch.

Thanks guys..

I forked out $73 otd for a new fan clutch. Napa had one in stock (never shopped at napa before!)..everyone else was 5 days out. Anywho, got the one, and no more squeek.

I wasn't quite sure if the shaft was part of the fan clutch and that came with the fan clutch. Didn't want to buy a part I didn't need, ya know?

Anywho, bought it, it's all one peice. The squeek was comming from the shaft/clutch and felt like sand was in the bearing so it was shot. The new clutch felt smooth while turning, and I can actually hear rushing air when I give it gas! Something I havn't heard for two years..

That was the problem I had. You should not hear the rushing except for every now and then when the engine is hot. The fan is supposed to cycle on and off. My truck sounded like a Cessna taking off every time I got into the gas.

This is what the high speed fan makes it look on the nice dry trails here in CO.

The dust is from the fan not wheel spin.

I found out there are 2 clutches available a heavy duty and a normal. The heavy duty never let go. Hope yours works right.

Thanks! Yeah I'm not sure I'd like all that dust while roadin lol

Where was that picture take at? Only trails I've hit up were here in/around the foothills.

The rushing air, I only hear it when I first start the truck, then yeah, while it's running warm (op temp). Like I said, I've never heard it before so clearly my old one (ford stamped) was bad for awhile.

Speaking of all this, reminded me to remove my plywood board infront of the radiator - block airflow to keep truck warm/warm up quicker in winter cold.

That would be a good time. Not sure I would want to drive one that was not mine on that kind of trail. Unless your work is REAL understanding.

You'd be surprised!!

We've had vehicles go out brand new, and come back with more dents an dings than we know what to do wtih. The most abused are the tahoes and susburbans.
