Uh-Oh, i've got low coolant and antifreeze in my oil. I've got a 1982 with a 6 cylinder (doubt if its original, looks like it came out of a tractor) Anyway.....whats the best way to replace the headgasket?

I'm assuming its the headgasket and not a cracked head.

i'm assuming that you think it came out of a tractor because its long and narrow? thats a strait six. i had that in my 88 and it blew a head gasket to. the good news is that in an 82 you shouldnt have all the fuel injection headache that i had to deal with (unless it is indeed an implant motor) if you have a haynes they are pretty good about that procedure. its pretty simple just taking off parts and putting them back on. i'm sure sombody will elaborate but basically just follow your haynes. and pray its not actually a cracked head.

The best way? Theres only one way, remove the head and gasket, then reassemble. have a really good look at the gasket and look to see if you can see the damaged portion of the gasket. If there is no damage to the gasket you might have bigger problems and it would be a good idea to send the head in to get checked out. Actually you want to consider getting the head rebuilt anyway since you have it out. Throw in a bit of port and polishing and put it back together. Your lucky in the fact that the 300 is a very simple engine to work on. Its about as basic as it gets. Follow the torque specs to the number and your set.

LOL, I don't really think its a tractor engine....its a 6cyl, I'm not that familiar with Ford engines.

It has plates on the side to get to the internals like an old Studebaker or Chevy engine. Its got the right mounts for alternator/etc, but it just doesn't "look" right, I'll try to get some numbers and post it, just out of curiosity.

I need to get a Haynes manual for the truck. On another issue the truck starts and runs, idles, great but its got vacumn lines loose and stuff missing off the carb that would make you ask yourself how the heck is this thing even running, much less purr like a kitten (Maybe it is a Studebaker engine after all?, LOL).

The plate on the side of the engine is an access to the lifters and push rods
