also with the headers you might want to upgrade your Y pipe if you are not doing the double exhaust .

If you go with headers, you will basically have to replace the entire exhaust system which means you will have to do the EGR removal mentioned in you EGR post.  To do true duals, you have a couple of options:

i run Hedman headers, with true duals. I still have my EGR stuff.

Your EGR will still work as long as you still have enough backpressure in the system to make it function. Otherwise the computer would be getting erroneous input from the EGR Position Sensor.

How will I know about the EGR? Is it difficult and costly to replace?

Forget about the EGR, if it works fine. If it doesn't, get a kit ot bypass it. From what SrATEX said about his it will work just fine. If it doesn't you will have to do something to satisfy your computer, see previous post.

Alright ya'll well 7 hours and many problems later my new headers are on. I ended up having to use a drimmel to cut out some of the bolts on the collectors after having my buddy use his impact wrench to break those rusted things loose. The passenger side took nearly 4 hours with problems and breaks, but the drivers side went in smoothly without any problems really. My manifold came out in two pieces from the crack that was all the way around it. That sumbitch was heavier than both new headers combined. But afterwards when I started it up and let it run there is kind of a funny smell, not exhaust, fuel or any other fluids its only what I can deem that "new header smell" is that common after installing headers??

The "funny smell" is prolly just the black paint or coating burning off of the new headers (unless you got the pricier ones with the special heat coating). Just listen for leaks around the collector ******, it will sound like a ticking noise. Good luck with the headers, and watch the starter for any signs of excess heat from the header tubes.

I really have no idea what the purpose of headers are or specifically where they go, and the advantges of having them? Do they take place of the exhaust manifold or how does this work? My passenger exhaust manifold has a giant crack all the way around which causes a terrible exhaust leak and i was thinking of taking it off and just welding it, or would it be smarter to just replace them with headers? Someone who knows this s**t please help me out!!! thanks again..

Hey, man, I put a set of Heddmans on my '84, 351, from Summit, and replaced the whole setup with a set of glasspacks, and all the tubing from Pep Boys, for around 200 bucks. Of course, I did all the welding, from the collectors back, but everyone says it has the baddest sound of any Ford around. It helps if you know how to weld, as I did it in my GRAVEL driveway, in about 4 hours..........

I've got an 87' with a 302, 4wd and a 4 speed manual. I don't know if this will work for you or not, but here's what I did:

Yes, headers are much better on performance, reduced back-pressure on engine, reduced heat on engine (better heat dissipation). But, it can be a be-yatch to find ones that fit properly. I searched the world over and went to Summit Racing. They shipped me a nice set of Doug Thorley, ceramic coated shorties. I paid for them though$$$ Bolted these puppies on, had a local shop do the bending and fitting of two pipes, put 60's series Flowmasters on them, removed Cat. Conv. completely. After 1000 miles or so, re-tighten the header bolts. Spare no expense on the gaskets when you bolt them on too. It's not quiet, but not as loud as some I've heard. And it did improve fuel economy and engine performance. Thorley's are the way to go for headers. Headman, ****** (both Holley products) didn't seem to have anything for me. The ones I have are EXTREMELY nice. Also, DO NOT wrap your headers or pipes with insulation. Even if you're running Aluminized pipes...it will still cause rust problems. Keep it simple. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
