I really have no idea what the purpose of headers are or specifically where they go, and the advantges of having them? Do they take place of the exhaust manifold or how does this work? My passenger exhaust manifold has a giant crack all the way around which causes a terrible exhaust leak and i was thinking of taking it off and just welding it, or would it be smarter to just replace them with headers? Someone who knows this s**t please help me out!!! thanks again..

Headers take the place of the manifolds, they are free flowing tube style manifolds. With them you will gain more power, usually a deeper, more pronounced exhaust note and sometimes better mileage. I also have a cracked manifold and will be replacing them with headers.

It was cracked when i bought it over a year ago, and this entire time i only thought of welding it up. It never occurred to me about replacing them with headers. So would I already have exhaust pipes connecting to both manifolds? In all the time i've spent underneath i've never noticed. So besides replacing them with headers what else do i need to add into the system. I've been told that my cat back system is probably clogged and that could be causing my lack of power, so i was thinking of just cutting it out and putting a straight piece of pipe in, or just replacing the entire exhaust system with dual flowmasters. How hard would it would to do this from a single exhaust cat back system??? Also what brand of headers are recommended for bronco's? ******, headman, magnaflo? any suggestions or links to info on them?

If you go with headers, you will basically have to replace the entire exhaust system which means you will have to do the EGR removal mentioned in you EGR post. To do true duals, you have a couple of options:

1. Bring the left side over to the passenger side to get around the transfer case and then either both out the same side or bring the left side pipe back over.

2. Put in enough lift to allow you to clear the transfer case (take a look in the member gallery at Freaks system.

I believe Headman shorties are common on Broncos. I'm sure some of the other guys/gals on here have their favorites and will chime in.

Good luck,

:)>-

As much as I would love to put some shorties on, I might as well wait until I just have a bunch of money to throw away. I just put on new shocks about 6 months ago and spent $300 on those, and i like the current height so i don't wanna lift it. I think i am just gonna buy a new manifold for like $90 and buy a piece of pipe and cute the cat out, and weld the pipe in place. I was told by a mechanic who just adjusted my timing and stopped an issue i've had for 6 months now with it dieing on startup that my cat could be clogged and that may be why i have such a stall on acceleration. I just spent $250 on the K&N intake 57 series about 5 minutes ago, so I don't have enough to just throw away into the full exhaust system right now, i'm gonna do it one step at a time. Thanks for all the tips and info guys. I will update you as I make any progress with my baby, as well as adding some new pictures.

Headers are way better (minus the collectors that I always have trouble with) they weigh less that ONE manifold and allow it to breathe out much easier. My .02 would be to do the duals and not waste money on a single pipe exhaust if you plan on going to them anyways, most muffler shops 'round my parts are doing specials for about 180

But don't you have to get them with the cat? I don't want a cat on mine i just want it done and gone.

By law you have to have cats on reguardless of headers or stock manifolds. That being said I dont have any on mine and since I dont get emission checks I never plan on having them put back on :)>-

But if by law i have to have them, than that means i cannot have my exhaust welded up for me in a shop right.

I can be fined for not having a cat, or for having it done in a muffler shop?

go with shorties. those will allow you to retain most of your stock exhaust setup, or whatever setup you have. another advantage of some shorty headers is a ball style collector, which eliminates the need for a gasket and possibility of exhaust leaks at the collector or blowing out a gasket. here's a solution to the cat. cut it out, hollow it out, and put it back in. it wont harm your mileage, and the inspectors wont know the difference (visually)

having it done, not too many cops are willing to crawl under a truck to look at your setup and if they are youre getting a ticket no matter what.

So how much work am I looking at just unbolting the stock exhaust manifold and putting a new one on? Is it just the matter of like 4 bolts, and and than the exhaust pipe that connects? I am curious how hard this will be.

Well **** just found out my cracked manifold on the passenger side is gonna cost me $120 just for the manifold plus the gaskets and s**t, and my drivers side one is gonna cost me quite a bit more than that. Everywhere I looked online showed them to be around $80 or so. I could buy headers for the price its gonna gost me to do this, although with headers i'd probably have to do quite a bit more work and i'd need new exhaust pipes and s**t.

So what is this ball style collector? And would I be able to get pretty good shorties for around $300 or do i need to spend $500 - $600 and get headman. What in your opinion are the best headers for the best price?

Alright, so I called up my local parts store earlier and discussed prices with me. He said he'd recommend spending the $300 that it would cost me for new manifolds and just get some shorties. He can get me any brand I'm looking for Bassani to JBA to Headman. All my friends that have headers on their vehicles have gone with Headman, but I've been wondering why is it that nobody on here seems to go with anything but Bassani or JBA. I will most likely go with those since Bassani just seem to be overpriced to me. But anyways, do the Headman Headers not bolt right up to the stock exhaust? I was also wondering if the new gaskets and header bolts will come with them. I was looking at the JBA header kit for my bronco and their website wants $389 if i want the gaskets and bolts does this sound right???

look at summit's online catalog. go to vehicle search and then go from there. i know alot of ppl over at fullsizebronco like their summit shortys and they do bolt strait to the exhuast and only cost 170$. they also come with a free kit of special fasteners. to me its alot better than paying 4 to 5 hundred for bassani and JBA
