Well, keeping the stock manifolds & exhaust is definitely the cheapest route, no question about that. Headers, particularly longtubes as opposed to shorties, will give you additional HP & torque. Compliment the headers with a true dual exhaust and you'll see a bit more power from the combo. Yes, you can do your own but you'll need to be sure you get something pre-bent that's designed for a Bronco. Even though your cats are hollowed out I'd keep them (or get a set of replacement test-pipes so you don't ***** up the distances for the pre-bent system and you also keep the **** for the O2 sensor) & get a cat-back system. Borla probably makes the best & being stainless it'll last for the life of the truck. Order yourself a set of longtube headers & a cat-back system and you can install it in the driveway in a wkend. You'll hear & feel the difference plus you have the added benefit of having set up your exhaust to take advantage of any other modifications you may make further down the line (such as throttle body, intake manifolds, cam, etc). the engine is an air pump and if it can't get rid of what's being pumped thru it then you have a chokepoint. A good set of headers & duals will support & compliment any other engine mods you make.

I agree with the cost issue on keeping the stock manifolds. I have always found headers to be a little lighter. Also, be sure to use good gaskets, especially if the headers are aluminum. The iron on the block and aluminum headers expand and contract differently with heat conditions. Muscling in a set of headers only to have to take them off again for a pinched or slipped gasket will make you wish you'd never been born.

Headers! Headers!! Headers!!!

Did I mention headers?

I put the thermal coated long tube Headman's on mine and it made a noticeable difference in the heat in the engine compartment (it dropped) and in performance. It actually felt peppier. The sound is nice too.

Rick, I am new to modifications. can you be more specific with the exact model of Headman Header you ordered and how you installed?

Thanks,

I don't know the model number of them, about 2 years ago I looked in a Summit racing cat and found it. I installed them myself by first soaking the old exhaust manifold bolts in PB Blaster overnight then they came right off in the morning. The new ones went on very easily, the only thing I had to do out of the norm was drop the front drive shaft on the driver's side to get them up into place. The passenger's side ones dropped in from the top. I had no problems at all.

My bronco is a 1984 so it is a little different than yours, but I doubt you will have much problem. I put the exhaust together myself one piece at a time with clamps then had my uncle weld it up. When I put on the new lift I will have to have them run higher and tighter than they are now but for now they dump out in front of the back tires and give a nice sound.
