I recently had my engine rebuilt and I used the existing headers that it had when I bought it. I would drive and hear a leak and thought that maybe the headers were not adapted very well to the engine, but I recently put a new flowmaster and tailpipe on and he told me that he can see where the headers are blowing black near the gasket where it adapts to the engine. He said I would possibly need new headers because there may be a crack. Should I go with headers or stock exhaust?

If you have stock headers you may have a cracked header, but I would check for an exhaust leak at the gasket. Also visually inspect the headers for cracks. Most use shorty headers for ease of install. Long tube headers in some cases run close to the starter and trans and cause heat problems.

You should check California smog laws before you go and buy new headers. I live in California also and I bought brand new shorty headers that I knew were legal here. Buying from someone on ebay is risky, since alot of people will sell you anything. Then two years from now you find out that your truck won't pass smog.

Ill take it back to the place that rebuilt my motor and have him check it out. The guy who installed the muffler said that the black marks from the leak came out of the headers not from the gasket, lets see what it is when they take it apart. Thanks.

I need to know if you have any recommendations as to what brand headers, my mechanic said that it's the headers that are cracked on the right side. Thanks!

Scrapped a beat up Bronco with a right side cracked header. My '88 has a cracked right side header. Most of the guys buy shorty headers. They go for under $200 Summit Racing Pacer headers up to $600 for fancy stuff. I'm seriously considering Bassani Headers and Y-pipe, stainless steel for about $800 for both.
