OK, I have owed my '85 Bronco XLT for 4 years now. It has a 351 H.O, C-6, 9-inch rear,ect... I have replaced the starter and flexplate 3 times already and now I must do it again. Anyone have any ideas why I keep killing the flexplate? The parts house swears they are giving me the correct one each time. How Can I find out which flwxplate to use, 157 or 164 tooth?

If anyone has any ideas, that would be great!

Thanks!!

sometimes when you buy a rebuilt starter they grind the surface down that bolts to the engine block to make the core nice and pretty for resale. thats when you will need some type of shim to compensate for the reduction in thickness. if you are bolting them strait up without putting a shim there then the gears on the starter and being forced hard into the flexplate causing alot of premature wear. alot of times even a pair of washers will work for the shim.

I am having the same problem; I bought an 83 bronco with a 351 windsor that had starter/flexplate problems. Bought both new, had them installed, but now I am not getting contact between the plate and the stater motor. Seems that the Bronco came with a 302/C67 combo from the factory, and used the 14.25 inch diameter flexplate, and I bought and had installed the 14.23 unit which was correct for the 351, but too small for the C6. Heard of any similar problems, anybody out there?

What I found with my Bronco was the metel sheild between the engine and trans was worn, letting the starter drop away from the flexplate when started. I replaced the shield with new and solved the problem.

Thanks for the tip! I found out that the other flexplate won't work; has to be balanced for the 351, not the 302. I also heard that different quality starters can make a difference, so I got over to NAPA and am going to try one of theirs.
