I guess from all of your inputs, I have a 9" rear end in my bronco. I will go for 4.56 gears. I am pretty mechanically inclined, as I built this motor up myself, as well as all of the body work. now, is it a pain to change gears? do I need to do the front at the same time with the same gears? want to do this soon. all help will be appreciated! :)>-

the tag on the front end says 3.00.. also, since the rear is a 9", is the front as well?

you need to have the same gears for sure. If you have diffrent ratios your stuff will break. Its not to hard , I had mine put in at a shop.

If you were to go on pavement with 4.56 in the front and 4.11 in the back your transfer case and probably transmission? will blow up not to mention your gears..

No, all Ford Broncos 80 - 96 come stock with a Dana44 IFS. No matter what you have in the rear end, your gear ratio needs to match. If it's 4.54 to 1 in the rear end it must be 4.54 to 1 in the front.

A 9 inch rear end is easier to work with than a 8.8 since you can take it off the axle and work on the bench. You might want to get a shop manual and follow the proceedures in it.

Good luck,

:)>-

Yes there all a pain in the ass put in measure, take out reshim, put in measure, swear alot, take out reshim, put in measure , close , swear some more, I hate doing them I have to do the dana 60 in my plow truck soon because when assembling the truck my helper told me he put oil in it but didnt so now the ring gear is a pile of metal shavings in the bottom . Bluesman the 9 inch is one of the only rear ends where the entire diff assembly comes out , you have to first pull the axles out then theres bolts around the front of the housing and the entire assembly comes out so its just an empty case , Where an 8.8 The case holds your bearings and you can only remove the diff, ring gear, pinion through the back cover a 9 inch doesnt have a back cover because everything comes out the front . Also an 8.8 is a real pain to set up because theres whats called a crush sleeve on the pinion shaft used to set bearing preload , If youve ever tried to get one of them to start to crush you know how much of a pain it is and if you go too far you have to get another one and start over . To set up gears takes alot of patients and if your a tool thrower your goona spend most of your day looking for your tools . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

i've been on projects when changin gears and i dont think ive ever heard s*** and f*** so many times in my life! except when i go to my cousins and she has rap playin. i dont think i'll change them on mine because my bronco is gonna be on the streets more than in the mud. it would hurt my gas mileage and put extra wear on the engine that i dont need.

why cant you take of an 8.8?
30230[/snapback]

you can, but not in the sense he was talking about. 9" rear's have a removeable third member that retains the ring, pinion, carrier, and carrier bearings in one nice neat package. its a **** of alot easier than trying to set up the gears while the axle is still under the truck
