I have an 83 FSB and want to replace the current stock gauges for some new white faced gauges.

Need to know if I can just use the wires the factory gauges use and just reconnect them to the new

gauges or newer factor gauges. Want something that glows

Has anyone done this themselves? If so send me some pictures.

1st You will need to replace the current instrument cluster with a custom cluster that will fit the dash unless you plan on redoing the whole thing. I have not seen any modern gauges that were specifically made to fit in placed of the existing stock gauges. That will become obvious to you when you remove the instrument cluster.

2nd The new gauges will have to operate from the same input as the factory gauges in order to use the existing connections and senders, which is not likely

3rd You could do new gauges but in most cases you will have to also rewire them.

A new mechanical speedometer will probably work with the existing speedometer cable. A digital one would have to have a sender unit mounted and the electronics hooked up.

A new TAC may work depending on the design, but you can just hook it up according to the manufacturer's specifications.

The existing oil pressure sending unit can be replaced with a mechanical connection. This is a plus since the existing oil pressure sender is known for inaccuracy and failing and you will have a more accurate reading.

The temperature sender could be replaced with whatever sender the new gauges require.

The fuel gauge will most likely require an different sender unit.

The existing charge indicator is a piece of crap and the majority of them don't work so replacing it with a Volt meter is a better option any way.

Bottom line is, Yes but you have a bit of work ahead of you. Wires from point A to B may possibly be used for the new gauges, but I'd advise abandoning them and run new wires where needed.

I wouldn't mind doing that myself and have played with different designs for an new cluster but have yet gotten around to being real serious about it but it may come up again when I do the next round of improvements to my truck. In the mean time I have just added some extra gauges to my instrument panel.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks a lot. Also are there any gauges (brand, style, etc..) youve found to be the best or better of the others?

Seth, I'm using AutoMeter gauges in my 84 Bronco. It was much easier for me to just run new wires to the new gauges, instead of messing with the printed circuit and tracing wires for the old factory gauges. I don't think they would work anyway with my 88 460 motor. Plus, having the rollcage makes it a bit hard to work on the stock instrument cluster. i can easily remove the center bezel to work on thwe gauges or wiring. I've had a couple other rigs with the 3-gauge pod mounted under the dash, including the 86 Bronco and the 79 F-150. JSM84
