yo;

Fuel Gauge Testing; If the guage reads normally for some of its range, but reads full or bounces between full and the real value, the most likely cause is a worn level sender. The fuel level sender is a variable resistor located in the gas tank. A wiper attached to the float rides across the resistor, causing a change in the resistance seen by the dashboard guage. A high resistance (or open circuit) reads as "Full" on Ford gas guages. Over time, the wiper may wear through the resistor, causing dead spots which read as full. The only fix for this problem is to replace the sender. On later model vehicles with in-tank fuel pumps, this can be an expensive proposition. Ford only sells the fuel level sender as part of the fuel pump assembly, which can run well over $150. If the guage behavior doesn't follow any specific pattern, then it is probably related to some other electrical problem. You may want to inspect the wires from the fuel level sender to the gauge to see if they are possibly damaged. if other guages are also erratic, there is a good chance that the dashboard voltage regulator is bad.

My gas guage is on empty all the time. Having just bought the truck, I'm not sure how many miles I can go on a tank. Where should I start looking to fix this problem?

yo!

could be the gauge, a blown fuse, the sending unit in the tank, or the float in the tank

most likely; sending unit float has a hole in it; it will fill with gas & cause it to read empty all the time. new floats are around $8 from aftermarkey (NAPA is a good qual source)...but can be a PITA to get to without dropping the tank; or do a gas tnak access cut in cargo area floor as descibed by our pal Seabronc;Sender Unit Access Panel

Removal'These trucks employ a single, high pressure pump which is part of the modular, In-Tank Reservoir (ITR) assembly. Besides the pump, the ITR consists of a venturi jet pump, a supply check valve and a shuttle selector valve. All this is mounted on the fuel gauge sender ******. The sending unit is separate from the ITR modby Chilton via autozone.com

Removal of pump/send, unit/float. etc.Fuel Pump ... in a 96 by boss.. esp his advice.." There is a tool for this but you can make do with a blunt brass chisel. (use a brass punch and not a steel one as shown to avoid sparks) ..."

My bronco did the exact same thing one time. The needle was throbbing back and forth like crazy! This was about 6 months ago. My guage seems to work fine now and it still seems accurate. It seemed to be only a one time thing.
