i just bought an 89 bronco custom last week on thursday and friday i went wheeling with it and it died. i figured out that the fuel pump wasnt working because i had the same problem with my 94 bronco. in order to get it to work i have to either hit the top of the fuel pump or the side of the tank. both trucks i had to do that to before the pumps finally quit completely. if i have to hit the tank or the pump like i said then that should mean the the pump is dead and its not an electrical problem or anything else and the pump and filter need to be replaced. please get back to me on this because i dont wanna spend more than i have to to fix it this weekend

yo Chris,

Check FP Connectors first;

check for corrosion, terminal damage & what Ford decribes as terminal back-out which is when a pin or blade terminal of a connector doesn't mate well w/female part of the other connector or device. Could be on harness connector or the pump's side connector.

Testing & Diagram at the Diagnostic Link Connector in 84-95; "...Connect FP Relay to any ground to force the fuel pump(s) on when the key is in RUN..." MIESK5 NOTE; from Ford EVTM; The Control Module (PCM) runs the pump{s} for one second when it receives an ignition- on signal. It also runs the pumps as long as it receives a PIP signal from the Hall-effect devices, it continues pump operation even after the key is released from START. If the PIP signals fall below 120RPM, the control module cuts off the signal to the fuel pump relay or the integrated relay control module. The pump will also run when the terminals of the fuel pump test connector are jumped. the Control module signals the pump when it receives a CRANK signal, and when the Control module gets PIP signals that the engine is running. the pump does not run if the PIP indicates the engine is not running even with ignition ON {except for that first one second}.

miesk5... you're the best! I hope that you had a great Turkey day!

chris,

I just want to bring this to your attention... your 94 had a single in tank pump.

Your 89 has a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure one under the truck/driver's side frame rail.

thanks for the help everyone. it took me 2 new in tank fuel pumps, new fuel filter, new fuel pressure regulator and new starter cellenoid to get the thing runnin. its the strangest thing. the first pump i put in wouldnt turn on but the tuck ran for about 10 minutes then died so i figured it had something to do with the fuel filter so i changed that and it still wouldnt run so i returned the pump and picked up a new one and threw that in and it still wouldnt run so i changed the fuel pressure regulator and it seemed like it wanted to start but the pump still wouldnt work so i gave up and went in the house and let the truck sit for about an hour then went back outside, turned the key and all of a sudden the pump turned on and the truck fired up and its been fine ever since. its just really strange to me
