I have a 1988 bronco w/ 302,4spd aod if that helps at all. I replaced the fuel pump relay and the pumps are pressureizing and its getting 40 psi at the fuel rail but nothing from there on. it will fire and run for a second with starting fluid but then dies again. my truck is decorating broncobill78's lawn and i would like to get it running again. also when i primed the fuel pump like 10 times in a row and then tried cranking it the truck fired but only for less than a second. i hope i was descriptive enough without overkilling it. well any and all advice or insight is appreciated and when we figure it out ill be sure to post what the problem is.

Thinking that Dave has been working with you on this, I imagine that you checked for spark and have spark.

You need fuel, air, spark and compression all occuring at the right time.

You may want to try depressing the pedal to the floor and see if it starts. If so, you have a dirty IAC.

Check and clean your IAC

If that does it, pull the negative battery cable for 15 minutes or so the clear the fuel trim tables.

Then I would pull diagnostic codes from your EEC.

How to scan FORD on board Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in your driveway

Howto Pull Codes 1983-1995 Broncos, Mustang, F series Trucks, Econolines, 302, 351 and more

Yup, it's got spark. It fires regularly when hit with a shot of either but dies immediately after burning it up (no joy using that method to prime the pump or pull fuel down like you can with the mechanical pumps)

Pedal to the floor makes no difference

Cleaned the IAC last wkend along with the throttle body.

Have been disconnecting the neg cable for a few hrs at a time when charging the battery.

No codes present with the KOEO (obviously can't do a KOER), well, a code 11 system pass but that's it

Occasionally it gets a trickle of fuel and will stumble or fire for a second but very rarely and never more than that.

It has 40lbs fuel pressure @ the rail and it has spark. I have no idea why this thing isn't firing. If there were an injector relay or something like that it would be easier but it seems like the injectors just aren't opening. It was running fine last wkend so there's just no way that all 8 have simultaneously clogged or failed. I know the injector pulse comes from the PCM, but *that* was replaced last month (along with the starter solenoid, neutral safety switch, coil, coil resistor, TFI, & distributor). It took a couple days to sort out the timing but it had been running fine, sat for a few days and now it won't fire again.

I'll tell ya, working on this thing is what convinced me to go out & buy another 79' instead of the 89' I was looking at :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Have you found your culprit yet?? Mine is doing what seems like the exact same thing. Will start off of starter fluid, but nothing but cranking otherwise. I've replaced both fuel pumps, spark plugs & wires (they needed to be anyway), rotor and ignition coil. Fuel is available at the rails. The thing has had its share of electrical issues and I was thinking the same thing about a relay or some other common point, it just seems that the injectors aren't firing and the odds of all 8 going out at once is slim.

Go here for the best information on EFI engines that I know of. The page I am directing you to covers the various run strategies, in this case start . Ryan is a super source of information. I would bet your problem is found right within this description of what is necessary for an EFI engine to start.

Good luck,
