first time bronco

hello my name is eddie and i just purchased my first 4x4 last night actually.it is a 78 bronco kinda redish orange a little banged up on the front passenger fender, and the rear end leaks but i was givin a complet drum to drum rearend to put in it. it has 33 12.50 all terrains and a rancho 3 inch suspension lift on it. interior has no door panels or carpet which is great cause i want to rhino line the inside. at anycase i got it for 500 bucks and it runs strong just need to swap the rear end. my question is, is it hard to swap the rear end it doesnt look like it should be that hard the new one has the same gears and everything. i am looking forward to making new friends in the 4x4 community and getting to hit some trails.

Welcome to Bronco Zone!!!

IF the spare rear axle is a Ford 9" like your stock one, the swap will be "easy". You won't need to change driveshafts, brake lines, etc. but it is a good time to check those while the axle is out. Toughest part will prolly be removing the old bolts for the leaf springs/u-bolts, might soak those with some PB or WD-40 for a few days.

thanks for the responce the rear end is a 9" like the stock one same gears everything complet. in a 78 what is the front stock axle?

I would spin test (count revolutions) on both the old & new to be absolutely sure they're both the same gear ratio. (strainger things have happened)

Also, what's leaking...? new seals are a 1 banana job...much easier than an axle swap. You could save the spare axle for if/when real damage occurs. :-"

Definitely good advice, double-check the gear ratios on both axles. There is some good tech info on the Ford 9" and repairing leaky seals, worn bearings. etc. in the Tech Articles section under some of the Bronco links I've psoted. If you have any trouble finding something, just let me know. A spare 9" is also good to have on hand, so if you swap out the original one, hang on to it!

thanks for all the advice folks i will put it to good use. my buddy seams to think its nothing more then a faulty seal so hes going to help me replace it tonight after work.
