So I just bought my first full-size Bronco. It's a 1995 XLT w/ a 5.0 and an 8.8" and it has 201,421 miles on it. Bought it for $250 from a school I work at(there's a nice vo tech program there that it was donated to). I was taking a look at the title and I'm now the 3rd owner. The previous one bought it in '98 with 153k on it....lots of highway mileage I'm assuming. The body is rust free but there is quite a bit of surface rust on the frame. The tranny was rebuilt and torque converted replaced at 196k. The fuel pump needs to be replaced and I'm just wondering what anyone else would suggest I look into.

First off, Welcome to the Zone > . The frame is not a problem. Just clean it up and use a good frame paint system like Eastwood's Encapsolator http://www.eastwood.com/catalog/product/view/id/1/s/rust-encapsulator/category/26/ , POR15 http://www.por15.com/Floor-Armor-Accessories/products/16/ , http://www.rustbullet.com/?source=adwords&gclid=CJ7IgOXMq58CFRh15QodJn321Q .

Notorious rust spots are mainly those that collect dirt and moisture such as floor boards under front rug (mainly from the drivers wet boots), the B post (caused by a poor splash guard design that allows dirt and moisture to be thrown there by the tires), and rear body and 1/4 panel lower support (caused mainly by the same problem as the B post), tailgate collecting moisture at the ledge where the inner section and outer skin attach, which can be solved with a bit of work (at least on a new tail gate, on an old one it depends on when you catch it).

Post some pictures when you get a chance.

Good luck,

:)>-

Here are some pics. As soon as it is out of the garage I'll put more up. I think it is in great shape considering it has 201k on it and it was $250.....006.jpg009.jpg

So I am already in the whole almost twice what I paid for the thing with a new battery, Fuel pump and sending unit assembly. I've spent the last 3 days underneath of the thing trying to figure out how to use those plastic spring coupling tools. Those fuel lines were tough. After taking everything apart and getting the assebly out of the tank, we realized that it looked like someone had taken it apart and just said "F" it and put it back together. Jerks.

I think it is really odd that in the farming area that is the Eastern Shore of Maryland not a single parts store carries the fuel pump or sending unit for a Ford Bronco w/ a 5.0. Weird.....

Fuel pumps/sending untis will vary from store to store. Most the time they have the stuff, sometimes they don't stock it, or only stock one and two weeks ago someone picked it up, and you have to wait till the next shipment (unless you order it).

Consider yourself lucky. If you can drop 3 grand into it to make it run well and do what it needs to do, that's great! Better than dropping 50k on a new truck that does the same exact thing (just slower and less convince items!)

Good luck with the truck. i got a 5.0 myself..though in a bit it's getting a new performance motor. Developed an engine knock. Not bad with 316k miles on it

Finished reassembling the fuel pump and sending unit 2 days ago. It will be going back in tonight and we'll see how this thing runs. I've never heard it go, just turn over...and over....and over....... you get the idea. [-o<

Howdy & Welcome to Bronco Zone!!! Good deal on that Bronco, you likely saved it from the CFC program and certain doom. Be sure to check all the fluid levels in the engine before firing up. If it's been sitting for awhile the oil may be bad, low coolant, bad belt, etc. that you can catch before it causes a problem. If you change the oil and filter, take the time to cut open the old filter. Check for metal, sludge, signs of water/coolant. Before driving, check the fluid levels in the tranny, t-case and diffs. A little prevent maintenance may be all you need to get'er running. Good luck, JSM84

Fuel pump kicked on and it fired up!!!! Now tomorrow time to change oil and coolant (both looked fine but it has been sitting)......sooooo pumped :D/ . I forgot about the inertia switch after everything was bolted back up. Almost cried when it wouldn't start on the first few attempts. Let it idle for a minute or two. No knock, sounded soooo smoothe. I can't wait to drive it down the street tomorrow (even if it is just a couple hundred feet.)

[-o< almost time for state inspection [-o<

So I got everything buttoned back up and now it fires up the first time every time. Actually it starts better than my '98 Cherokee which is ******* me off....but that's a problem since the Jeep is sold. So I move it out of the garage and in that 50 ft move, one of the brake lines goes and the pedal drops to the floor so next step will be putting in some new lines and getting all the components set. <_<

Oh well, I'm just very excited about the engine running. One step at a time..... $-)

So it looks as if I have officially caught the bug and I am spending every minute (and paycheck) I can get working on the Bronco. As it is now, I have either installed or ordered the following parts:

- fuel pump and sending unit

- 32x11.50 BFG A/T's on 15x10 Outlaw II's

- VSS sensor (went bad)

- Front hub assembly

- Manual hub conversions

Up next is the new paint, exhaust and small lift kit. Maybe some new heads and cams for the 5.0 too

Any recommendations for exhausts and/or headers?
