 1990 Bronco Full Size 4x4 Eddie Bauer 5.0 E40D

PROBLEM: High rev and hard shift from 1st into 2nd. Same thing when breaking thus downshifting but with a prevelent grinding sound.

ACTION TAKEN: Ran codes and recieved the following:

33

(KOEO, MEM)

ALL. EGR did not open/ respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittently.

41

(KOER)

System lean.

11

System checks OK.

All fluids have been check and recently changed.

I am totally caught in a fix for I have no direction now since I now have a twofold problem.

Please help if you can - Thanks!!!

The EEC doesn't dignose the transmission, other than electrical faults, and this isn't an electrical fault. Take it to a pro.
Did you even look at the EGR system? Did you attempt to open it? Did you check the wiring to the EVR &/or EVP? Did you check the vacuum lines & reservoir?
Other than a visual look-see I opted to make this post first to get second opinions. I will first take it to the pro for the noise in the tranny while I read further on working on the EGR and EVR. Your information is greatly appreciated. Believe me my 16 year old son is on seat's edge to use his Bronco.

One possibility Nick,

Vehicle Does Not Move Diagnosis & Service Tips TSB 94-21-14 for 90-95 Bronco, Vans & F Series; "... may be caused by the check ball, located in the rear cooler line converter drainback check valve assembly, sticking...."

One more;

hard shift from 1st to 2nd

E4OD could be in "Limp Mode" also referred to as Fail / safe mode. "Fail Code" conditions or "Limp Mode" happens when the vehicle computer recognizes a problem in it's logic. When an expected signal value from a sensor is sent to the computer and is not within the computer's programmed specifications, "secondary" programs are activated by the computer to strive to protect the transmission from damage the improper sensor signal might cause to occur. Did you do the KOER Self Test w/engine at Normal Operting Temperature?

Thanks again! It sounds logical enough regarding the Fail Code issue. I have none the less purchased a remanufactured tranny and I am in the process of removing/installing using your wise input as well. You Da Man!
