My 5.8 eqippeed 91 has a trans problem. The trans is an E4OD. It's very sluggish in 1st, pulls real good and hard in 2nd and 3rd, won't lock up or go into OD. I drove it straight home the day the trouble surfaced so as not to aggrevate the problems. Many of the Ford guys I've talked to say dump the E4OD in favor of an AOD. One would think many other things need changing to pull that off, perhaps more trouble and cost than re-building? I'm unfamiliar with what generally goes south in the bigger ford trans, and much of the tech jargon I found elsewhere on this site is kinda greek to me. I work in a prototype atmosphere and those are the kind of people I've spoken with. They have me nervous about the trans case. Any input on the subject would be welcome and appreciated. Thanx in advance.

You can do it but the AOD isnt very strong either . I do believe that you will also have to change the computer as the computer you have looks for inputs from the gear selection switch on the E4OD for timing control . I would just look around for an E4OD out of a 95 or newer F150/250/bronco as they are much stronger and are a direct swap for you . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I agree with the suggestion to upgrade to the newer (95-up) E4OD. A used one will run around $600 at a salvage yard, or having your current one rebuilt with upgraded parts is around $1800. Then add about $500 for labor to install whatever tranny you go with, unless you can do that yourself...
