I was driving the other day, i downshifted into 2nd going down a hill, so i didn't burn my brakes up, and it made a strange growling noise, but shifted fine. I didn't think anything about it, untill the next day. I started driving and when it shifted into 2nd you can hear a low pitched whine. It shifts into drive and overdrive fine, but still has the whine in drive too. There is no whine in 1st. I downshifted into 2nd from drive manualiy, and it has a really bad growling noise, but down shifts fine. When you slow down and the tranny downshifts automaticly the growling noise isnt so apparent, but is still there. The fluid is all of a sudden really burnt.

I'm going to drop the pan tomorrow, and look for metal chunks and pieces of my tranny in the oil. Sounds like a new tranny to me, but if anybody has another cheaper idea i would greatly appreciate it.

i know that when mine started doing it my torque converter was going out. i also was shifting my auto manualy, but i was running the hel* out of it. my fluid was also burnt. i figured while i had the tranny down i would rebuild it also. alot of the clutch disks were worn down and warped

I'm not sure if it is the tranny yet, my magnetic plug on the rearend is full of metal flakes, and so is the one in my transfercase. I'm going to drop the pan tomorrow. How hard is an E4od to rebuild, and where do i get a master overhaul kit?

Try this place http://www.drivetrain.com/autotransoverhaulkits.html#FORD

The advantage of having a good transmission shop do the job for you is that they have the equipment to completely clean it and if parts are required other than the basic kit stuff they will have them.

Good luck,

:)>-

Another good thing about taking it to a shop is you can just about always get a warranty with it. If you really want to rebuild it yourself then I would find someone that has done it before to help.

I probably will take the tranny to a professional, just because i don't want to mess with it.
