i know there are numerous topics on both but i have yet to see this one..,

aftr blowing the rear shaft in my 96 i started shopping around for a new shaft and the bronco graveyard asks you for lenght,

expanded and compressed.this i understand;but after checking advance auto parts, murreys, and autozone none of them ask for this, they only

ask for type of trans,or it will say not for 3.08/or 3.51/or 4.10 rear end gears.

any correlation to gears i should woory about?

i have a 96,lifted 6",with 35's and 3.73 gears

just wonderin why the difference in questions the stores ask

The difference is that Bronco Graveyard knows what they are talking about and the cheap big box stores don't. The graveyard is taking in consideration lift and the big box stores don't know anything about specially built vehicles. If you look at the Graveyard catalog, each drive shaft listed for the rear end states which transmission it is for. The reason the big box stores are talking about gears is because they are selling you a shaft with a considerably weaker tube which can't take the torque of some gears, ie. not even to OEM specifications. The gear question covers their but if you ignore that and break the shaft, hopefully not on your way up the side of a hill :-& .

If you are in the market for a drive shaft, I assume you have either just installed the lift or you already broke one. If that is the case, you may want to get one that exceeds OEM specifications. Stay away from Big Box stores when you buy parts and go to a real parts supplier. In this case, talk to people who do lifts and gearing for a living and know what they are talking about.

The running gear is an area a lot of people ignore when re-gearing and adding larger tires. The OEM hardware will work fine until extreme torque is put on it and then you end up blowing the rear end, snapping shafts, axles, yokes or universal joints.

Take a look at this information at Pirate 4x4 http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-shaft/ . It will get you on the right track.

Good luck,

:)>-
