Does anyone know where to find the computer module on a 96? A buddy of mine is having issues and for whatever reason wants to replace the chip. Don't know the specifics of his problems since it was a real quick chat. He is way more of a mechanic than I am, so I assume he has good reasons for wanting to change it, but he cannot locate said chip. Any suggestions?

Its accessed from the engine compartment, looking from the front its hook to the wire bundle on the far right of the fire wall, about 12" down and 12" to the drivers of the brake booster.

I think what Muzzall is talking about is the harness connector retaining bolt. The module itself has several retaining clips that bolt to the truck body & hold it in place, all are located behind the kick panel. To actually remove it you'll have to pull the retaining clips & then follow Muzzall's directions to the rectangular wiring harness connector in the engine compartment. There's an 8mm (I think) bolt holding it in place. Once the bolt is out you can unclip the harness connector & remove the PCM. Don't confuse the rectangular PCM harness with the large circular main wiring harness connector that's just above it & towards the center of the firewall.

That's where I've pulled the ECMs on multiple F-series from 92-97. One 8mm bolt to pull the wiring and two more and the ECM pulls out. The fun part is getting in between the fender and inner fender to pull it out.

The nuts holding the ECM seal to the firewall are 10mm or 11mm. There are no clips, and the chip can't be replaced - it's soldered to the PC board.
Interesting. Did this change somewhere in the later years ? I just replaced one in a friend's 88' 3wks ago & there were 2 clips holding the PCM to the body (looked like there should have been 3 but 1 was missing) & both had 8mm bolts running thru the center of the clip securing it to the body. If there are no clips how is the PCM secured ? Do they just use the harness connector ? What's the difference between the PCM connector center bolt & "the nuts holding the ECM seal to the firewall" ? That 88' I just did only had the connector center bolt & then the clips & bolts holding it to the body. Did they change that much ?

Absolutely right on the chip, there's ain't no replacing them. The best thing you can do if you want to upgrade is to piggyback something like the Crane Interceptor on there, but since Crane went out of business that really isn't an option :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Best that I know of is the the Programmable Engine Management System from Anderson Ford Motorsports:
