Hello what your talking about is refered to as the firing order . On ford V8,s the number one cylinder is located on the passenger side front cylinder 2 is the next one back and so on . The front one on drivers side is number 5 and the second one is 6 and so on , The distributor has 9 plugs on the cap the middle one being for the coil . What you should do first is if you have had the distributor out you need to bring the number one cylinder up to top dead center compression stroke , ( make sure it is the compression stroke or it will not start .) By compression stroke I mean that both vales intake and exhaust are closed whrn the piston is coming up . Once you have the piston at top dead center compression stroke you need to install the distributor in the motor now when it goes in you might get lucky and it will drop right in but most of the time it sets on top of the oil pump drive and wont go in the rest of the way until you move the crank a little in either direction. If you do have to move it verify when you turn it back that the piston is at TDC compression stroke , It really doesnt matter which of the 8 distributor cap post the rotor points at just as long as you use the post its pointing at for number one cylinder. I think most tune up manuals call out the front post as number one or the cap has a 1 next to one of them however you want to do it. now the distributor turns counter clockwise so whatever post you have the rotor pointing to will be number one which that wire would run to the front passenger side cylinder as that is our number one cylinder. Now the firing oder for a standard 302 is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 . Soooooo now that you have number one wire ran to front passenger side cylinder the next post to the right if you used a front one for number 1 or the next post moving counter clockwise from the number one post will be number 5 which is the front cylinder on the drivers side . Then the next would be number 4 which is the back cylinder on the passenger side and so on . Once you do all this if it doesnt want to start alot of popping and caughing through the carb it may have a 351w cam in it or it has a 302 ** cam which the firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 for which you just need to rearange the wires . If you already have wires on it and the motor is running fine just change them one at a time and youll be fine . Heres a link to different firing orders . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />http://www.summitracing.com/tech/charts_gu...arts_firing.htm
