yo STU,

The air bag diagnostic monitor illuminates the air bag indicator for approximately six seconds when the key is in RUN and then turns the indicator off. This shows that the air bag indicator is operational. If the air bag indicator does not illuminate or the indicator stays on or flashes at any time, a fault has been detected by the air bag diagnostic monitor. trouble codes may not be displayed for approximately 30 seconds after the key is placed in RUN. This is the amount of time the air bag diagnostic monitor requires to perform all tests and verify system faults, if present. * Each code (a series of flashes and pauses of the air bag indicator) represents a two-digit number. Each code is always displayed at least twice. For example, a code Code 53 (five flashes, pause, three flashes). * If a system fault is present and the air bag indicator is malfunctioning, an audible tone will be heard, indicating that system service is required. The tone is a series of five sets of five beeps. This does not indicate a diagnostic trouble code 55. If the tone is heard, the air bag indicator is inoperative and a system fault that requires service is present

WARNING; Read all Safety Info; Such as, remove a battery terminal (Remove both) then wait 30 minutes before attempting any work on the airbag circuits; I have found a few vehicles that had an aftermarket component in it that had a 12v DC or higher re-chargeable battery

Code 53 Front Air Bag Sensor and Bracket Circuits Resistance to Ground or ADM Fault; Possible Causes:

A voltage drop in the primary crash sensor circuits or an internal diagnostic monitor failure can be caused by: A partial drop in voltage in the primary crash sensor circuits due to resistance to ground on the primary crash sensor wiring or any resistance across the normally open primary crash sensor contacts. Internal air bag diagnostic monitor on-board diagnostic failure.

Since it didn;t happen again;

CHECK FOR Rust, GROME, CORROSION in primary crash sensors' connectors

Sensor Overview; The sensors are an electrical switch pthat reacts to impacts according to direction & force. It discriminates between impacts that require air bag deployment and impacts that do not. When an impact occurs that requires deployment, the sensor contacts close, completing the electrical circuit necessary for the system to operate. The sensors are located in the vehicle in several places; primary crash sensors and brackets are located on the left and right front radiator supports. Rear Air Bag Sensor and Bracket Assembly (also called the Safing Sensor) is at the base of the RH (passenger side) B Pillar. The safing and one of the primary sensors must be activated simultaneously to inflate the air bag.
