I'm looking to upgrade the gears in my dana 44 front end to a 4.09:1 unit from the stock 3.50 (to match the 4.11's in the rear).

I have a quote to do the swap for a new R/P, new open carrier, bearings, and labor for about $850 (in northern CA). It's a little more than I want to spend but in reading through my shop manual this is not something I want to do in my garage either (presses, spreaders...and I have no experience meshing gears).

Do you have any ideas for a more cost efficient way to go or should I just put the 3.50 carrier back in my 9 inch and call it good. (liked those 4.10 limited slip gears through...)

Finding good used (with the gears you want) pumpkins is fairly easy...

then you could handle pulling the hubs & axles yourself.

Prob. do it all for +- $200

Might get lucky & find one with a good posi in it as well... /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

The Dana is the harder of the two axles to do. You can definatly find someone cheaper to do them for you. Especially if you buy the gears & install kit yourself. I got a quote from the best place in Colo. Springs and he quoted me $850 to set up both front & rear w/ARBs and new gears. But that of course was with me supplying the parts.

Check Mike Kirkus at Complete Offroad for some of the best prices on gears, diffs, lockers & stuff.

Gear kit with everything you need cost around $250 & the carrier isn't much.

Install is around $200, so your guy does sound spendy.

If I were you I'd get the parts ($300-400) needed and pay him the $200 to install. Thats $250 saved.
