Just purchased our first Bronco. It is a '79 and runs like a dream. The steering however is something different. When you drive it feels like it is floating. Your turn one way and to get it to go straight again takes longer than what it should. Any ideas? Brother-in-law said it could be the steering gear box, someone else said it could be the bushings need replacement. Imput would be appreciated!

Mine tends to do that also. Thats what we get for off roading. Check the tire rod ends. Mine were completely gone. Also make sure your gear box is secured to your frame tight. My bolts had loosened up.

Oh your evil. That nut is not to adjust play. That is preload, very dangerous to adjust that, I would strongly advise you to not touch that *****. If you do not believe me and do it anyway, count the threads that you turn so you can set it back when you realize what I am talking about.

Breny I STRONGLY agree with Yardape, If everything else is ok , tierod ends and such and the gearbox is to blame REPLACE it. You can make it feel "tighter" by adjusting the ***** on top but all that would really do is increase the tension on the bearings "preload"and could cause the gearbox to fail completely.

My main concern is it tightens the feel of the box, but does nothing for the play. It also makes the steering stick, so now you have play and the steering sticks. Please if you doubt me do what I suggested and count the threads that you turn the bolt, I have this and I am glad I counted. Its a bad bolt, should be tamper proof.

I looked at the ***** on mine, Logically I couldn't think of any other reason the ***** could be there, so I adjusted it. It was insanely hard to control, I was all over the place. The town I live in is all hills and they are quite steep. That was a pretty scary ride down the hill. That was long before I found this site, so I was on my own for Bronco repair. I learnt the hard way.
