Hey Guys!

I recently traded my mustang for a Bronco and I love the Bronco so far. I have been trying to get the coolant temp to operate in the

correct range but the needle on the temp guage does not go beyond the N in normal. First I changed the thermostat which helped a little. I then

flushed the radiator with water. Next I filled the radiator with water and zerex cleaner to clean it. I ran it for ten minutes like that until it got up to

temperature which was where it should be in the middle. I then drained that and flushed the radiator again with water. I then put in a 50/50 mix and

it just seems like it is not getting to the temp it should. I put in a 190 stant thermostat. Is it possible that through flushing something got stuck and made

the new thermo fail or what should I look at next. I just thought that it was odd that it got up to temp with water and the cleaner in but not when I put

in the coolant. Also if I need to change the coolant temperature sensor is that the same as a coolant temperature sender? Thanks to all for any help

in advance I really just want to drive this beast and enjoy it.

get a temp gun and see what temp it is actually running at before you keep spending money!

What makes you think that your engine is running too cool?

If anything, if your temp guage is erratic, my guess would be that it is a bad sending unit, a bad guage, or a bad ground, and that your engine is probably running at normal temp now. I don't know what the recommended thermostat temp is, but if it is 180, and you went to 190, you may want to consider putting a 180 back in.

Here is a thread on how to check the fuel guage.

The water temp guage works similarly, you should be able to garner enough info from this thread to test the temp guage.

If something was clogged you would be over heating.

The water temp sender is a resistor that changes value based on the temp of the engine. It could very well be bad and if you replace it, DO NOT use Teflon tape on the threads, that is the ground connection and the threads are designed to seal without any help. As far as the Tstat goes, it all depends on how you want to run your engine and any tstat from about 160 to 190 is OK. The lower end develops more power and the higher end will give a little improvement in gas mileage. In my engine, being old and in need of either a rebuild or replacement, I run with 180 which helps keep the oil pressure up. At 190 the pressure drops too close to 0 when idling with a hot engine.

Hope that helps.

Good luck,

:)>-

The temp gauge in my bronco doesn't even make it to the "N" in normal and I am perfectly happy with it. It just chills halfway between the line and the N.
