I'm trying to find a bronco to buy and there is one I found which is a good price but the guy just put a new c4 transmission in it, and I'd really prefer a manual. Is it very expensive to convert it to manual? Thanks.

Hi Tx.., welcome..!

"Is it very expensive to convert it to manual?"

Wellll..., yes-n-no... Like you I prefer a stick shift.

If there was someone local to swap trannies with., that would be great but not likely.

A lot of the parts are avail. used., & most are as good as new.

Also, ALL of the needed parts are avail.

A place to work, the tools, help when needed.., etc. are important as well.

Doing it yourself would likely be $1000-$2000+. Of course, a shop would charge more.

You can view the conversion kits at Bronco Graveyard., Toms Bronco parts., & Wild Horses 4x4 to get & idea what's needed.

Thanks, that's helpful. Also, why do some people make the conversion? Besides the obvious point of some people prefer automatic, do these run better as auto's, get better mileage, or anything like that?

"...do these run better as auto's, get better mileage, or anything like that?"

I noticed the mileage to be less with the auto trannie. I got 8-10 with the auto I had. As with most any veh., a stick will usually get better mileage.

Some folks prefer the auto for rock crawling.

I didn't mind the auto on the hwy...., but while in the dirt., there was nothing to do.. :-"

I even put in a floor shifter that was quickly shiftable.., even that didn't help.

It's just a preference thing.... some folks are totally happy with the automatics.

Mileage doesn't matter much., unless it's a daily driver.

Thanks for the help. Another question, I found another one which is a 3speed column shift - any idea if these are very expensive to convert, or is it about the same? Thanks.

Unclear if you're refering to a transmission (found) or the whole veh...

And, convert to what...?

Taking a guess that you mean the shifter moved to the floor..?

The complete kit is +-$270

yes, I was unclear but that's what I meant. Thanks. Surprised it's that cheap. Now I just need to see how this thing does on the highway before I pull the trigger...

Thanks for the help.
