Column shifter problems

Has anyone w/ a 78/79 experienced this???? Is this a common problem? I was getting ready to back into my driveway, stopped the truck, went to shift from drive to reverse, and the shifter broke loose around the steering column. I put the T-case in neutral because the truck was in the middle of the street and when i went to shift, the trans went into Park.........(typical day in my life).....

After I winched the truck into my driveway, (I even pushed it instead of using my GMC 3500....) I pulled the steering wheel and the shaft the shifter hooks onto that give the leverage to shift, snapped off....

Does anyone know if this is a common problem or anything?????????

I'm installing a B&M Megashifter on the floor in place of the column shift, but an curious to see if anyone else has had or experienced this annoying thing....

That's a bit odd. The shifter snapped clean off? Well, I've never known that to be a common problem, but I guess it is possible.
