I am having trouble with the stock 2barrel carb on my stock 400 in my 79 Bronco. I had a problem with trash stopping up my lines, filter, and carb. So I installed a new tank, new electric fuel pump, new rubber line and cleaned out all the hard line. Now I have a good fuel supply goin to the carb and fuel filter is crystal clear, but I am still having running problems.

Sometimes while driving or just idling it will start to idel really low and miss, but no smoke. Sometimes it will clear out after awhile and be fine again. While it is idling real low and missing if I close the choke manually it will run good if I let it open up it will miss and idle low.

What is the best way to take one of these carbs apart and clean it? Or is it just bad? It is a remanufactured carb about a year old.

Sopunds to me like you got some of the trash into your carb. Take the top off the carb and look down into it. You will probablely see dirt in it. While you are at it----take the carb off and (notice how many turns -each adjustment screws have . Take them out and make sure all openings are cleaned out and the holes that put gas down into the motor. These carbs are simple to work on. Good luck and I am sure this will solve your problems.

Ditto on what Johnny Reb said. You might want to just put a rebuild kit in it which also comes with a set of step by step instructions. The idle ***** procedure he was talking about is: to carefully run them in untill they just stop (don't turn them in hard) and count the number of turns. Then when you put them back in run them intil they stop and then back them out the number of turns you counted before.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks bud, Re-building these 2 barrels are easy. It has been awhile since I have tinkered, but I am getting back into the grove. My dad had passed away and I had some bad luck with my health. ,but I am getting back in the saddle and when I have a problem -when I get to working on a vehicle---my dad comes back to me and reminds me -what I need to do. Some of you will know what I am talking about--dad,s do still pass knowledge onto us-------while they are looking over us. Good luck and this summer I am planning on getting more tinkering---if the Good Lord is willing and the creek don,t rise.

I really enjoy this sight ,reading the problems and learning as I go ------I still learn at 58

Ok, thanks . Now is it doing alright?. Hope so. If not . Lets hope we can be able to help you. Also ,if it is not running ok. You will need to keep us posted of what it done BEFORE AND AFTER--so we will be able to stay on top of things.

Sorry about that guys I kinda left the site for a couple months without ever checking up on it. Bronco runs great now, 600cfm Holley Carb, Edelbrock Intake. I just need to adjust secondaries, it has a Black spring right now, I think I might need to step up to a Brown spring.
