my c6 does not go into 2nd and 3rd. will a rebuild kit fix it.its an 82 5.8L thanx
A rebuild usually fixes everything, not not everything *needs* a rebuild. What exactly is it doing ? When it doesn't shift into 2nd or 3rd have you tried manually shifting it ? What I'm wondering is if you have a bad modulator valve. Try taking it for a ride & when it *should* shift into 2nd but doesn't try manually downshifting from Drive to 2nd & see if that kicks it into 2nd gear. It probably won't go into 3rd regardless of what you do but if you can get it into 2nd that way then you probably have a torn diaphram in the modulator, a lot of times you'll also notice a grey smoke in the exhaust when this valve is blown but not always. If doing this doesn't change anything then sure, I'd go ahead & rebuild it but try cking the modulator first. If it IS the modulator just pick up another at NAPA or somewhere & install it, it's loated in the rear of the transmission & is the round doohickey that has the vacuum line attached to it. Also, just for kicks ck to be sure the vacuum line is *still* attached to it because if that gets torn off you'll have the same prob (won't shift out of 1st)

ok sorry didnt explain, so i just bought this 82 bronco with 182K on the odo, with a Warner 8000Lb winch on it. and the girl who sold it to me said it didnt shift into 2nd or 3rd. i havent started it because it the engine is full of oil. and the gas is really old, been sitting for 5 months. i did check the vaccum line and it looks good.

The reason i ask is because i found this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...rksid=p3907.m29

(yay or Nay?) and for the $100 for the kit and i got a friend who can do it for practically free, and he is really good. so i was just wondering if i should go ahead and just rebuild it.

I hear what you're saying and I understand the situation. I'm not trying to be an ass but the fact is that it doesn't change the answer at all. Fact of the matter is that a LOT of C6's that don't shift out of 1st have bad modulators. Simple as that. You can go & rebuild it if you want but there's a good chance that it will do *exactly* the same thing when you reinstall it unless you replace the modulator valve. The transmission can be *brand new* and if it's got a bad modulator it won't shift out of first. If you have a chance to grab a rebuild kit dirt cheap then sure, grab it but just understand that there's a good chance it won't fix your problem. Most guys START with the $10 fix and then move up the ladder. If you want to go the other way, more power to ya. Maybe just grab the kit & throw it on the shelf. Chances are you'll *eventually* need to rebuild the tranny and when/if that day comes you'll be able to reach up on the shelf and say "ah ha, this is just what I need". If you want to go ahead and just rebuild it then sure, knock yourself out. Just remember to replace the modulator valve when you do or it may not act any differently.

The 80-96 Bronco has a Dana44 TTB (Twin Traction Beam) fron t end. To find your gear ratio, look for the axle code on the sticker located on the driver's side door jamb. You can also look at the ID tags bolted to one of the bolts on the differential. Post up what you find, or searchthe forum for "axle codes". Remeber to use the " marks when searcching, JSM84

Like JSM said, you have a Dana 44IFS (independant front suspension) front axle & ck the codes as he suggested but I'll be amazed if you have anything other than 3.50 gears. 90+% of the Broncos out there came with 3.50's and the rest were special order trucks with something else (maybe a 3.08 towing gear ) but the vast majority of them have 3.50's

You should have a 9", if it has a ring of bolts on the *front* of the axle (the same side that the driveshaft bolts to) then it's a 9" if it has a regular differential cover bolted to the *rear* of the case then it's an 8.8"

LIKE JSM84 AND BB78 WERE SAYING,BUT ALSO IF YOU HAPPEN TO LUCK OUT ON THE AXLE THERE SHOULD BE A TAG ATTACHED TO ONE OF THE HOUSING BOLTS....AND WHEN YOU READ THE TAG IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY THE MIDDLE # WILL BE THE GEAR RATIO....LIKE BB78 SAID MY BRONCO RUNS 3.50 RATIO AND IS A 9 INCH AXLE....THEY DIDN'T CHANGE MUCH ON THESE TRUCKS FROM 1980 TO 1985....
