1978 Bronco 400m C6.

The other day, my bronco revved up between 1st and 2nd, about a mile later I lost all gears. I checked the fluid and it was a touch low (1/2 quart) I topped it off and thought the problem was solved. The next day, it lost all gears again. I let it sit a minute, started it up and they were back for a mile, then gone. wait a minute and they are back. I pulled it in to drop the pan and check the fluid, and found a bolt missing in the linkage where it pivots. I replaced the bolt but still the same come and go problem. Didn't get to dropping the pan yet. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a filter getting plugged?

how does the fluid smell? if it has a really strong foul odor such as throw up to it or anything like that that means it is burnt and could be an internal problem..also on the back of your transmission there is a vacuum module..take the vacuum hose off of it while the truck is sitting if fluid leaks out of the module you have a bad module
