It looks like the one on my 96 that just broke into pieces. It goes on the horizontal bar to the attachment piece of center of tire carrier, that when you close the tire to attachment of body of rear Bronco, it acts like a shock absorber when closed. It is right where the metal attachment on rear of Bronco, and the center piece of tire carrier mesh together. I hope this is not to confusing. I don't know if you have to slice it to go over the rod or not when replacing. Can anyone tell me where this bushing goes on the spare tire carrier? It is approximately 2" long with inside diameter of about 1 1/4".View attachment 30030

Pictures are beyond my pc -- It is just to the side of the catch of carrier going into the rear of Bronco to latch. You can Google a schematic of 96 spare tire carrier, and you will see.Could you post a pic showing exactly where you positioned the bushing on your spare tire carrier?

Did you have to split the bushing to go around the top post on tire carrier? Thanks. I think that's where I had it--on the top, horizontal bar--but it seemed to prevent the latching mechanism from engaging.
My original bushing has crumbled since 96, and I purchased a new one that is in a complete circle, and I just wonder if the only way to go in is to split the energy bushing? You could try wrapping the area with black electrical type tape, and trying to close the carrier after every couple layers. Its possible that something is slightly bent or adjusted out of position, and the bushing is touching down someplace it should not be-or is simply too thick in one spot for your current setup. By sneaking up on the thickness of the bushing until the latch will NOT catch it could show you where any tight places are.
Probably where the swing arm attaches to the striker on the tailgate (not the striker itself, the wide “guide” area that helps keep it in place as its latched)Can anyone tell me where this bushing goes on the spare tire carrier? Can you post a photo showing exactly where you installed this bushing?I got mine from Energy Suspensions. It comes with it split but fit a little loose. I used some inner tube to wrap the bar first then put it on and zip tied it. Works great.
I just got a message from Energ Susp, and they said it was split. My bad, as it looks like it has not split in it; however, I will have to relook in morning. It makes sense to be split, I just did not see the split as it is so tight. The idea of using tape to go around the rod was a good one if no bushing was available. We bought our 91 XLT Bronco about 9 months ago. I think we did OK it is straight, good paint and no rust. The front rims don't match the rear ones.
The picture of the bushing for spare tire you can see from the pic.
I'm new at this of posting I would like to start a new subject have not figured out how to do it.

My Energy bushing did not have the split, and I cut the split in bushing, and installed on the rod with the small *** that holds the bushing in position, and it works like a charm. I think the split was just enough play for the latching to be perfect. Yep, it acts like a buffer when closing the latch. It is to stop any raddling. There is a rubber stop on the latch that needs to be adjusted, too far out it will not latch, too far in you can get raddling.
