My 89 Eddie Bauer has been stuck in 4-wheel drive since the last snow(2/10) It has the electric shift lights that are working, however it does not disengage the transmission to 2-HI. Fluid is OK.Have not delved into anything else (not a mechanic)

What is it doing thats making you believe its stuck in 4 high?

how your 4x4 works is you have the transmission which drives the bronco by using the fluid that you checked, but the transmission bolts onto the Transfercase. when not engaged the transfer case carries the drive from the transmission to the rear wheels, when it is engaged it uses gears and chains to "transfer" drive from the rear wheels to both the front and rear wheels. the only oil used is for lubrication and can only be checked with the drain and fill bolts in the transfercase.

some transfercases are operated via a manual shifter where like a manual transmission you move it to select between 2 hi, 4hi, neutral, and 4 low.

another type is the push button or shift on the fly, in this setup the push button operates an electric motor in the transfercase that switches between 2hi, 4 hi, neutral and 4 low.

which one do you have?

finally what kind of locking hubs do you have in your front axle, are they manual and require you to get out and turn them when you want to use your 4x4? or are the automatic and lock whenever you use your 4 wheel drive?

having a locked from end will mimic some of the characteristics of being in 4 wheel drive when turning.

I think if you've driven your truck a bit (for nearly half a year) with it locked in 4wd.. you'd probably have fired/broken something.

Does it act funny when turning?

yo,

1356 Electric Shift Operational Test; "... (engine off, hubs disengaged), crawl under the truck with the transfer case in 2HI, you should be able to grab the front drive shaft and turn it by hand. Also with the hubs disengaged you should see the front axles turning freely. Now engage the hubs and you should not be able to turn the drive shaft by hand. Jack the front wheels off the ground with the hubs engaged, turn the drive shaft by hand, the wheels should turn. The 4x4 light should not be on in 2HI, when in 4LOW you may have a low range light on, (not all trucks have that light) at least mine doesn't..."

especially this section:

"...To check if the transfer case motor is actually functioning (because it may be hard to hear it in a noisy shop) attach a voltmeter to A4 and A5. Have someone activate a shift and look for a brief (one second) increase in voltage and listen for the relay to click on, then off.

If there is power present, then the control module is trying to run the motor. At this point, unbolt the motor and have someone activate a shift again. If the motor doesn't actually turn, it is malfunctioning and must be replaced.

If there is no power to the motor, check both the power circuits again and the sensors. If there is incorrect sensor data, the module won't power the motor...."
