Bronco Restoration

Hey all,

I am currently holed up in CT, away from good old VA. I'll be heading back down south in Aug when I can go on leave from the Coast Guard. Anyways, I'd like to pick up a new Bronco (had to sell the 91) and begin a restoration.

I was thinking pretty much top to bottom, inside and out, over the next three years or so (limited time). Is this feasible?

Also, how hard is it to swap a jasper, or a used motor in for a dying one? Is it worth it to just pay to get it done? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the zone. Sometimes it takes longer than three years to get such a project done. If you opt for a used motor, you never know what you're going to get or how long it will last. I'd save up for a rebuild, that way you'll know whats been done and you can have it built to your liking and everything will bolt back up.

Get the motor rebuild? Or opt for a re manufactured motor like a Jasper?

Jaspers are ok; some have prob w/em tho;

get some estimates from them & Ford; Ford has a good guarantee and the Qual is up there. And the Ford reman engines do not need to be installed by a Ford Dealer.

From an OLD Coastie to a young one, doing that with my 83 right now. Been at it for about a year now, and hope to pretty much finish this year.

I would look around, take your time and try to find a Bronco with at least a good body. It's much harder and more expensive to do major rust repairs than to replace interior or suspension parts. You're looking at ballpark around $2500-$3000 to have a shop rebuild the old motor or install a reman/ used one. The labor is going to be the biggest cost, so antything you can do like pulling the motor or dropping it in yourself will save money. I would also give some thought to what you want to use the Bronco for, be it daily driving, weekend offroad, etc. Do you want to stay original, or add a 4" lift and 33" tires? Things like that you can daydream and plan a whole lot before spneding a penny.

Hopefully, you have a plan or vision of what your "ultimate" Bronco will be. IT took me about 3 years and $10K to get the 84 Bronco from a $300 broke-engine relic to phase I with a 6" lift, 35's ,new paint and show-readiness. The past 5 years (yes, that's been dragging out forever) have been devoted to phase II with a F-350 drivetrain swap and a ton of fabrication. JSM84

Like Seabronc, I also have a "Bubba" phase with different-colored body panels. I'm back in that category with the white doors and blue body!!!
