Lately my bronco has had a oil problem. My oil gauge keeps saying the oil is low and moves around alot. i checked my oil and it is not low. could this be my oil pump or what? also when the gauge moves and says its low the truck starts ticking.

This could be one of two things or both for the guage issue. Either your gauage is shot or your oil sending unit is toast.

Have you checked your oil while the truck is running or only when it is off??

Is it your oil level, or the oil pressure? As your oil heats up, the pressure will drop at idle, but it should never be below about 20 psi. When the rpms are higher, it should usually be 45+.

A good rule of thumb for oil pressure is 10 PSI per 1000 RPM. However, the sender units on these trucks has a bad reputation of crapping out. I have been running my old engine on 20W40 in the Winter with a quart of Lukas and 20W50 in the Summer. a lot of people resort to a mechanical gauge to be sure what is actually going on. The older the engine the more nursing it needs. Eventually it may need a rebuild.

There are several possible reasons for low oil pressure, (pump, bad filter, wear in the mains, sender unit, etc.). Eliminate the cheap ones first. I'd start by using a good filter not a cheap one Fram filters stink, I'd use a Moble 1 or Baldwin. Then change the sender unit, don't use Teflon tape on the threads, it needs the metal to metal contact since ground is through the engine block and the threads are designed to seal. After that, if need be, I'd go to a heavier oil. Then maybe you need to start thinking about and putting away money for a rebuild.

General answers, I know, but you haven't provided any information on what engine, year of truck, etc. you have. Add your truck vitals to your signature, it will help :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Good luck,

The scary part is the ticking sound.

I've seen posts that speak of the oil pick up tube getting clogged with sludge, but beyond that, (as I understand it) oil pressure is created by the pump, and lost with worn bearings.

go to a mechanic and get the pressure sensor checked, make sure its reading the correct voltage. in my bronco my oil gage goes all the way to low at idle and when i push on the pedal it picks back up. but the pressure is fine. sometimes it has to do with grounds. but if its ticking, thats usually a tell tale sign that oil is not making it to the heads, which in your case, would give you low pressure. sounds like you need a new pump, or if the pump has a screen in front of it, clean that off too.
