I've been doing a lot of reading on the forum. Some people are saying that a stock tranny will not last running bigger tires, they also said that aftermarket axles are a good idea. If i'm not going to be doing any extream offroading is all the extra work really needed? I guess you know how that goes though you always say your not going to do anything to crazy, but when you go out with boys you never know whats going to go down.

If you have a "light" foot, then 37's will be fine. You will want to change the gears for sure, 37's will bog you down pretty bad. I'd go with a minimum of 4.56's, 4.88's would be better.

I don't ever remember anyone saying that the transmission is an issue with large tires. However, you definately need to regear. If you are going to put much stress on the axle like in serious off road activity stomping on it, then you will want to think about putting in a beefier drive shaft and axles.

Good luck,

:)>-

the stock 3-speed is pretty much garbage for anything. Just a really big paper weight. You can buy them all day long for under $100. That is the plus for them. The negatives is that they can't and won't take the abuse that say a bigger/beefier tranny can. That being said, your stress from bigger tires won't effect it the way it does axles & driveshafts because it is "protected" by the x-fer case. If you want to run bigger than stock tires, which are roughly 27x8, then you need to consider going with a gear change &/or axle upgrade. But that also depends on what size tire you are going to go with. If you keep it under a 33" tire, then a 28 spline axle & 3.50 gears will work. I ran that for years. If you want better then go with 4.11s & 31 spline axles. Just depends on how tall & wide you want your shoes.

I really want to put it on 37's. I like the clearance and they will look *******. What's your thoughts and what size tire do you run on yours.

37's are a good size. A friend has 37 inch boggers on his '79 Bronco. I currently have 33 inch BFG Mud Terrains but I am getting 38.5x15 16 Inch Boggers for mine. 4.88 Gears, 3/4 ton drive train.

You will need to do quite a bit of fender trimming to get 37s under an EB. That and a combo of a lift. Your typical 3.5" lift won't fit 37s without an additional 2" body lift & trimming. I used to run 31s but currently I run 33s, the pictures show what a 31 looks like with a 3.5" susp. lift only. Note the space that is there, those are Duff urethane flairs on there so you will have to trim even more with 37s. The second picture is my current set up with 33s on 4.5" susp. lift completely stuffed. There isn't much room there either. So, with that in mind, you need to really look at how much you want to trim off the fenders. The other thing you might want to think about, and I am not trying to shoot holes in your boat here, but what are you gonna use it for? Is it a daily driver, a crawler, a mudder or just for show? That could determine what and how you go about building it.

I'm trying to build a eb that can do a little of everything. No extream rock crawling or mudding, with the money that I'm about to put into it I don't want to destroy it. I would like to maybe show it I don't know I change my mind all the time. I like to keep my toys looking new, brush scratches are about the only damage I plan on doing.

I ran 38's with 5:89 gears. I ditched the 3 speed for a Np435 4 speed with a 205 t-case for strength. The D20 t-case is weak on the output shaft and I've head of them splitting in half. The big Broncos, F150's and some F250's have the NP435/205 in them. You can get the axles also. Remember 3/4 ton axles are the same strength as your EB axles. They are all still D44's up front.

i run 35 inch pro comp all terrieans and it really kills my preformance running stock gears in the back it boggs down sometimes when you stomp on it i also have 36 in tsl sx's and when i put those on my gas milage really sux and it takes a heavy foot to move them down the road with a 3.55 in the back but when money is tight you got to do what you go to do... lol if i ever get the money i am changing to up to a 4.88 deffinatly and going with some 38.5 i. i have had my transmission rebuilt once but i think that is from all ofthe miles never herd of the transmission being and issue have herd of axles going out and drive shafts breakin i had to get my drive shaft custom built spent about 350.00 dollars on it after i bought it from a junk yard.
