I just bought an 86 bronco and it appears to of had a bad water leak in the past and sat for awhile with water coming in from the windsheild someplace. It seems the water ran down the inside of the dash and maybe through the brake and clutch pedal support (where the pedals pivot).

Anyways, I disconnected the master cylinder pushrod from the brake pedal and the brake petal is pretty stiff to move. When I move the clutch pedal, the brake pedal moves with it. I can move them seperatly, just stiff. I have a feeling the water has caused rust/corrosion inside the braket pedal support. I've tried spraying **** in the right and left side, but doesn't seem to be helping much.

How hard is it to take this assembly out and apart so I can clean and grease it? I'm not even sure how its held in there. I can't see any bolts or anything. It looks like its attached to the dash frame, i hope it doesn't involve taking aout the entire dash!

Here is a photo. You can see the **** I sprayed and how the **** turned brown due to rust.

Thanks for any help!!

yo,

Welcome to the Zone!

I believe you have this issue as well; some info may help; and some repair LINKs are in my site that may help;

Clutch Cracks Firewall TSB 90-16-7 for 84-90 Bronco & F Series Source: by Ford via terrapinmfg.com

It is a PDF file

"...12. Check the cross shaft bushings for wear if the brake pedal moves when the clutch is depressed

and vise versa. Replace them as required. NOTE: GENERALLY, TRUCKS WITH SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN 11 MM CLUTCH

RELEASE BEARING TRAVEL (AFTER COMPLETING THE INSPECTION PROCEDURE AND CORRECTING WHERE NECESSARY) WILL HAVE SIGNIFICANT DASH DAMAGE FROM PULLED SPOTWELDS AND TORN METAL. THESE TRUCKS WILL REQUIRE EXTENSIVE REPAIR. THEREFORE, GO TO THE LARGE REINFORCEMENT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE..." There are two small reinforcement kits. One for 1988 and later models and one for 1987 and prior models.

This is necessary because a new hydraulic clutch master cylinder mounting pattern was introduced for 1988

models.

1987 And Prior Trucks

Use reinforcement kit E3TZ-7K509-A on these trucks, Figure 5. Comprehensive installation instructions

are included in this kit.Firewall Reinforcement Plate & Bracket Source: by Terrapin Manufacturing

He pulled pedal assy out and wrote; "... removed the steering column and foot pedal assembly along with the instrument cluster and this is all covered in the TSB so I won’t get into the details on how to do this here. My concern is the actual plate and it’s installation..."

yo,

I did it again and over-wrote the following;

these are from Steve83 in his Clutch Album: He repalced his tranny w/86

Just one of MANY reasons why this mechanical linkage sucks.

pedal-rod-86.jpg

The only solution was a later pedal shaft with splines, so I found an '86 shaft & pedal.

==============

and from;

"...CLUTCH PEDAL Removal Disconnect pedal return spring from pedal and bracket. Unhook barbed end of clutch/starter interlock switch from pedal. Remove clutch pedal after removing retaining nut on end of shaft. Remove bushing from pedal shaft. Installation Install bushing on shaft. Place pedal on shaft and tighten nut. Install return spring. Make sure spring is hooked to pedal and bracket securely. Insert barbed end of interlock switch rod into bracket. Check and adjust interlock switch if necessary...."

yo,

Welcome to the Zone!

SNIP Lots of good info SNIP
Thanks for the info! Some of the photos really help! Luckily I don't have the main issue described, just the shaft that passes through the tube is rusty/corroded. But the images will help me to see how its held in there and how to get it out (looks like I have to remove the steering column).
