well i ordered the borgenson power box. now to connect it to my stock manual steering column. i see a shaft that is collapsible and comes with a borgenson joint on each end, one end connects to the box and the other end to the original shaft. problem is the stock shaft is 3/4" round. any one here ground there shaft down to be a DD. ive heard of people using a angle grinder to do this. seems it could be done, might not be the prettiest looking DD in the world be seems like it would work. i have also thought of getting a DD shaft from the wrecking yard and using a collar to join it to my 3/4" round and welding it. any other options without breaking the bank.

Hi Hotrod.., welcome..!

I've done more of these than I care to remember. But never did one proper & complete (as in new). But, they all worked. I did patch-in installs/repairs like you're speaking of. Even the shaft in my '66 is a mix-n-match...., maybe one day I'll do it right. (It's been in there for many yrs.)

B4 buying a lower shaft., you might want to research "Flaming River" steering joints. They have different style connectors on ea. end, as you choose. They are state-of-the-art. (around $70 ea.)

Telescoping lower shafts are good but not really necessary on an EB. they're meant for hi-speed crashes so as to keep the upper shaft from spearing thru your chest. Those types of crashes are "rare as hens teeth" in a EB.

Also Toms Bronco parts & Wild Horses 4x4 have complete (top-n-bottom) shafts availabe.

HTH,

B

what i ended up doing was buying the complete oem setup form a 77 bronco, box, pump, brackets, hoses, pulleys and even the original cooler. used but in good condition. cant wait to get it. i do know that my original manual steering shaft isnt going to connect to the power steering box. the only thing i can find is a rag joint listed, guess thats what it used. next = disc brakes. then i can drive it.

That's a good setup.

The two shafts & joints are something you only want to do once.., so it doesn't get two expensive.

'73-'77 P/S box has a 13/16 - 36 spline shaft.

On some up-grades, the rag joint will rub on the fender-well.

(rag joint handles flex, vibtation & road noise transfer)

'76-77' had a lower "telescoping shaft" & a rag joint on the upper shaft, with a big u-joint at the box.

Enjoy,

B

well ended up buying another setup off a 74. first guy couldnt find the time to ship his setup out so i cancelled the deal with him. was for the best because the second guy i bought from had everything, including the original telescopic shaft. i was able to cut my shaft and slide it into the original by cutting the rag joint end, drilled, pinned and welded. whoaa what a difference, its a real pleasure to drive now. i remember when i put power steering in my old 55 willys jeep, best thing i ever did.
