Hello all,

Just got a $200.00 85 B2 up and running after it set for about 6 months or so. It was only missing the distributor. Got one from another 85 2.8 and got the engine runnig and timed in. 2 problems now. It idles WAY high for about 60 seconds and then idles down to norm after it has warmed up a bit and at inital start will high idle until I tap the pedal. I have to other B2s, 87 and 88, both 2.9 EFI. This carb one is a bit odd to me. Also, now that's it's running it boils over after being driven any real distance. ANy ideas on either one welcome. I think it's the water pump for the boiling as I have no oil in the water or water in the oil. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

It is my understanding that more often than not, that when a water pump goes bad, it is the bearings that go bad and they start to leak. I think that it is more likely that your radiator is clogged, and that you are not getting enough flow through it.

Regarding the high idle on initial start up, that may be normal. I guess that depends upon how high the idle is. However as a part of the automatic choke, there should be a step down plate with an idle adjustment *****. If I remember correctly, that ***** can be adjusted independantly of the regular warm idle *****. If you haven't a CLUE to what I am talking about let me know, and I or others can be more discriptive.

Yeah,

I think it may be the pump, no leaks but it looks rather old on the outside and I have seen older Fords with the internal blade rusted free of the pump shaft.

As for the high idle I mean to say it's racing when first started and then after pushing in the clutch after you start driving. It will only come down to a normal idle after flooring it and releasing? Dunno as this is my first foray into the elctro carb system. Played with other carbed cars, including an 86 Jeep with the 2.8 carbed motor, what a dog it was too. I'll have to play with it some more I guess. Thanks again.

One other thing I forgot to mention, you may want to try some carb cleaner. It is possible that your choke is sticking a little.

Yeah,

I've got a few lying around. Well, the high idle seems to have resolved itself. Gotta pull the rad, again, and water pump to see if it's the problem. That'll have to wait for the weekend, 12 hour shifts get to you after weeks of it  More to come.........

Hey I like bronco 2,s too . Could be a head gasket I never ran one of the V6 I always had V8 in mine but a buddy ran alot of rangers with the 2.8 and 2.9 he had one of each that had a bad head gasket and both overheated . Leave the cap off and let it warm up watch to see if theres a bunch of bubbles in the water as it flows . Worth checking :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
