Im just curious on people's take on the best power steering kit. I have a 70 EB with none and currently have 35's but plan to have 38's. Anyone have a brand they feel is the toughest?? Any anyone had problems with a certain brand??

Thanks

John..,

--Not aware of any actual "brand" --

Sky's the limit...depending on your knowledge/abilities., your mechanic., intended use., & your shop. (and $ wallet) B)

However.., the "stock" Ford EB pwr. steering works fine.

There's some add-on's to beef it up for rock'n, etc.

The stock EB box is good. I have run it for the past 7 years with 33s. I just recently had it rebuilt by West Texas Offroad & they did an exceptional job. Another option is to do the 4x4x2 conversion. Basically you take a box off of a 78-79 4wd Bronco or F-150 & put the guts of a 2wd same years Bronco or F-150 into it. Look up West Coast Bronco, the store not the club, to find an entire how to write up on it. But the 4x4x2 box is stronger than the stock box. I will say that the only box that is a direct "bolt on" application is the EB swap. All of the others (Toyota, Scout, Nissan, 4x4x2) require a slight bit of modification to the mounting system. Personally, if I were going to go 38s or bigger, I might look into ram assisted. It is just easier on the box that way. Check out West Texas for that too. But any way you shake it, look at dropping right around a grand to get the conversion done.

Thanks for the info. I checked out the specs at West Coast, pretty cool. Who sells a stock kit? I looked at duff's kit. I dont know if that is a stock type, It has a Saginaw pump, but they calm to have a excellent control. then I looked at Wild Horses' kit has a Delphi pump. Any one of these the stock type? any one better? thanks

I thought you might look at this. (direct bolt in)

Tom's ., & Wildhorses., (leftcoast)

Jeff's (right coast)..., & Duffs. in Tenn.

They're all good.....the pumps are interchangable & not a maj. prob. (they will explain)

They have "box" braces for ********* rock'n as well. & some gearing options.

The stock PS pump looks like this. Left hand side of the picture, it is mine. The Saganaw (i.e. canned ham) didn't come on EBs. The Delphi that WH sells is just an upgraded pump similar to the Saganaw. They are both better pumps for big tires. In all actuality, I would go with one of those pumps instead of an EB pump for the size tires that you want. The OEM pump will burn up in no time flat. I have talked to a number of guys who have gone through their originals with 31" tires on a regular basis. Weather that is from just abuse or bad luck, I don't know. What I do know is that even with 33s like I have, the stock pump growls with the slightest dip in fluid because it has to work harder. Remember, an original EB sized tire is only 235x75x15, or roughly 27" tall by 8" wide. You add a tire that is 11" taller & 5" wider, look at the weight it is now having to turn. About 150 lbs more than it was designed to turn. The Sag & Delphi pumps are higher output pumps and can take that abuse better. Even if you decide to go an EB swap, upgrade the pump. It is worth your effort to do it right the first time.
