:wacko: I just purchased a '90 Full Size 5.0L for my son. I have changed all possible fluids etc so to have a benchmark as to when it was done. There were no visible signs of leaks until about 2 weeks I noticed oil from the Bell Housing and of course it drips onto the exhaust causing a burning odor. Also about this time and most often when on the highway the check engine light comes on. I 'm not sure if there is a correlation or not, but the leak does have me worried. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

motor oil? If it is, then it could be a few diff thAngs;

intake manifold seal - oil pressure sender; valve cover gasket

all rel. ez DIY jobs ...let us know if it is...

If it is auto fluid, then that could be a number of things. The front seal of the tranny can go, the seal around the pump can go, there could be too much pressure inside the tranny and it could be forcing the fluid out the vent hole, there could be to much fluid inside the trany and it is being forced out the vent hole

Do a check engine light (CEL) Self Test as described by our good pal, BroncoJoe; http://broncozone.com/forums/index.php?sho...amp;#entry74587

do both KOEO and KOER tests (eng must be up to norm op temp for this part)

GL!

The 5.oL is also notorious for oil pan gasket leaks, in addition to those mentioned by Miesk5. If the rear main seal is leaking, there will be oil inside the bellhousing and on the starter. A quick check is to clean the engine best you can at the local car wash, then drive around a bit. look for a fresh trail of oil running from anywhere up above the pan. JSM84

i had one that did the same thing, it was the oil pan gasket....lay under it and rev it up to a steady 2k rpm with the motor hot (make sure it has oil in it) and you will be able to watch it come out

I believe you are correct in that I did finally have time to get underneath and take a good look tracing the evidence back to what seems to be the passenger side rear corner two bolts. At least this is where the oily grime seem to originate from.

I can't thank you an all those who have responded to my call enough. This project has allowed for my two sons and I to have a real Quality Time - Thanks!!!
