Been gone for awhile.... (Tranny Question)

Sorry gang....

Bronco has been running great!!!  Blast to drive and work on....  Turned into a daily driver when the son came home from college, yes I let him drive it (it's too hot for me 100's)

Put a TBP 2.5" with 11 packs in it in May and then added some 33" Cepeks.  Really settled down the ride, a little stiff, but it's OK.  Picture added....  I have since added the TBP Bikini top....

Currently son reported he wasn't getting first gear (C4) and truck was starting up in second.  That went on a couple days then he reported that it wouldn't shift into Park.  Dropped pan and valve body and got all sorts of hardware falling out.  The band broke, bronco is dead!!!

I have been dying to rebuild the C4 and since the tranny is coming out, might as well pull the engine.  While the engine is out may as well rebuild that as well...

Has anyone rebuilt a C4 in the garage?  Doesn't look that bad, but not sure if it is better to spend the cash and have someone rebuild it while it is out?

Someone give me the confidence to do it!!!

Hmmmm.., these engines in these EB's are quick-n-easy to R&R

If it's in good shape.., you could wait a while & just do the trannie first.

---- Doing a complete compression test & then tune & monitor with a vacuum gage

      or tester..., will give you the condition of the cylinders, heads/valves, etc.

      Then you could make that decision as to pulling the eng.

Another option is with the trannie out, letting a shop do the rebuild would save a lot of labor fees.

The torque converter needs looking at as well. 

Also.., there would be a certain amount of warranty.

As to doing it yourself.., you've done most everything else with great success..!!

Hit the books & then decide if ya want to tackle it...... :-B

Bully-  I DID IT!!!

Engine rebuild - nothing special just seals and rings (one broke ring); Valves were HORRIBLE (did my own valve job)

Transmission - Bought a C-4 rebuild kit and watched a Youtube video /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />...  

All back together and hanging on the hoist....  Gonna put it in later this week...

If it starts and drives, you are my hero...  Otherwise my beer budget just went up!!!

It was a crazy fun project!!!   Really enjoyed it....

One quick note:  Torque converter is part of the transmission and not part of the engine...  Assemble accordingly /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />  Good story here....

All back together....

1) When setting your timing, make sure your rotor is FIRMLY down on the distributor shaft, or you will NEVER be able to set your timing

2) Make sure you fill your transmission BEFORE you try to take a test drive, because if you don't have enough fluids in your tranny it won't shift and you will get ******, and then you will get drunk....

3) Replace your thermostat ANY chance you get, if it sits dry for a long period of time, it won't work and you will overheat your motor and shoot steam all over your garage and you wife will get ******.... (and you will get drunk)

One leak between C4 and Transfer case.  LOVE the twin shifter, will post more on this in a separate thread....
