Herzlich Wilkomen bie Broncozone, Peter!

In post #8 above, I asked Peter what year his truck is and to describe exactly what happened when he tried to drive it. (Does the shifter not move at all or does shifter move and the tranny doesn't go into gear) I also offered to translate if it would be easier for him to describe the problem in German. Below is the translation of his response. Sounds like a problem with the linkage, but since I've not worked on an '88, I'll defer to the "brain pool" for a response.

Here it is in English, guys.

He says the problem is in the steering column and that he has removed the column from the vehicle. He also asks if anyone has instructions or diagrams on how to take the column apart. All of my stuff is for 92-96 models so I don't have the information he is looking for.

His Bronco is an '88 XLT. Anyone ever dissasemble a steering column from those years? Or have instructions or a parts breakdown? He says he has called all over Germany for a replacement column with no luck so he wants to take it apart so he can order only the parts he needs.

He sent me the same post in a PM. Here are the photos that were attached:

Hello Guys,

another new German, but living in Chile, Southamerica. I have another problem with my 4AOD transmision. Driving my 95 Bronco now for 11 years, about 250.000 Miles, mostly offroad. I had in the last 2 years problems, shifting from 2. to 3., when the Transmision was cold, but now I can use only second gear, speedo don't work and no overdrive. Only the idiot (control) lamps, from ABS and Overdrive, are blinking. It happend, while , I was cleaning the road and had the Car for about half an hour standing, with the Engine running.

The Ford Service here in Chile doesn't work and nearly all Broncos in Chile have trans problems and I have to fix the problem by myself. It will be difficult to get another Trans to Chile, but I would like to hear some opinions, from people, who care about their Trucks and don't want only to sell new stuff.

I would like to improove my Bronco. In general, I have to say, it is the best allround offroader, I ever had. Working in the forestal Business, I drive my Bronco daily, crossing mountains, forrests, mud and rivers.

I put 33x12.50 Tires on 10x15 wheels, lift the front with spacers about 2", so the frontaxel can crank? a bit more and fixed Rancho HD adjustable dampers, but with harder dampers, offroading got worst. Another thing, we have in Winter a lot of mud and the Bronco is realy heavy and I hate digging. Normaly the Bronco goes better in heavy terrain, than other Trucks, but in mud.

Is there something to improve it? Another thing is, you can't drive fast on 'stoney' roads, the Bronco jumps about 1 Meter sideways on the rear. I tried some softer Springs on the rear, but it doesn't work. As I wrote before, would like to hear some experts.

I think, I'm the last Bronconuts here in Chile.

Regards

J

Roadkill,
I have an 88' sitting in the driveway with a column half-torn down. Are there any photos I can take & post to help ? Not like it's some trailer-queen, if I can pull the dash to get him a better shot lemme know.

I'm getting ready to swap in another AOD once I get some taller jackstands (freaking tranny hits the damn door when it's on the tranny-jack, even with 33's) so if linkage photos or something like that will help lemme know so I can take them while I'm able.
I don't know if Peter needs any photos, but take 'em anyway! You never know when someone else will ask a question where a photo would be "worth a thousand words" as part of the answer. As for Peter, he has found a place in Sweden where he can order a whole column but they needed those questions answered so they can send the right part.

This has been a truly international project. A German doing business with a Swedish company, comunicating in English. And getting "expert advise" from Americans. The world is getting smaller and smaller.
