I think the swithc for my auto 4x4 is broken, still have to pull the dash and check but how esay is it to find the part to replace it? If that is even my problem which i think it is cuz banging on the dash sometimes gets it to work.

There are 3 "normal" places for the 4x4 system to get messed up.

1. Shift motor on the transfer case.

2. Automatic hubs going south

3. bad switch

The switch is probably the least likely

Not too sure about pulling and replacing the push button switch(s) but I'm sure it's a PITA, given Ford's propensity for designing and installing components in odd fashion (i.e. the infamous tailgate and window motors, the Bronco oil pans et al).

So are you sure it's the switch? Becuase there's a helluva lot of parts in the Shift On The Fly system, starting at the dash, then down to the relay and control module, then the wiring outside to the electric shift motor---it's all pretty over engineered and prone to failure. Here's something that you may want to look at though, an inexpensive way to by-pass all the electrical crap and transform your t-case to simple, manual operation. And it's only $55.00.

Good luck.....

Well im not sure if it is the switch. When I push the button it doesnt click and there is no light, is that a sure sign pointing to the switch? Or can it be the actual motor on the transfer case? Im hoping its just the switch way less inexpensive of a fix. When the problem first occured I started with banging on the motor on the transfer case, but didnt help. Then tryed banging on the dash, which finally got it to work. Of cousre the same thing happened when i tried to take it out of 4x4 too.

"The switch is easy to replace, the control box is pretty easy to find at the junk yard, its on the pass side near the pass feet area."

I read this online... is this true is the switch for the 4x4 really under the passenger side dash?
Nah, the switch is on the dash. What you're referring to is the 'control module/relay/blah blah blah' box. Just one more overly complicated component in a sucky system.........

So last night I pulled my dash to see if it was the switch causing problems. Once I got the dash off and unscrewed the switch, it magically started workling again!
