I just thought that I would post an air conditioner FYI that I have learned over the past years and the last few months fixing servicing and fixing mine.
I have seen a couple of post about the AC not exiting where the selector is set to. Mine also did the same thing. When it was on Max it would not turn on the compressor and would come out of the defrost vents. In vent the AC compressor would be on. I decided that I needed a new vacuum selector/AC compressor control switch and picked the whole control panel up EBay for 15 bucks. After changing out the selector the AC would come on when it was suppose to and come out of the right holes. But the dampener for Max AC (recalculate inside air) would not work. It would always pull outside are.
Years ago my dad told me the best way to cool the truck when first started was to crack a window and put it to normal. It would pull in outside air, cool it and force the hot air out the cracked window. Try it sometime and from the outside feel the amount of air coming out the cracked window. After the truck starts to cool put it to max to pull the cooled inside air and make it colder. You should switch to max when the inside of the truck is getting colder then the outside air. Having it set to max on the highway will save you gas since the compressor is not running as long since and not having to work as hard to cool off the hotter outside air,
So back to the repair. The white hard plastic vacuum line to the dampener was leaking and loosing vacuum. I first tested the dampener by removing the hose and closing it and put my finger on the input line. It stayed closed so I knew the diaphragm was ok. I
