When I bought my 96 Bronco four years ago the ABS light was on with a piece of black tape over it. I wasn’t concerned as it drove great. Figured I’d work on it down the road. After reading some posts on this site I’m wondering if I’m better off leaving it. I bought it from a long time Ford salesman in Alabama and he took very good care of the truck so I’m wondering if he might have experienced the issues others have mentioned. I don’t drive this truck very much and just put all new Goodrich all terrain tires on it. Thoughts?

Yo scubscout53,
Here is the reason for the tape;
4WABS Control Module Bypass for PSOM Operation due to a Bad 4WABS Control Module at 4WABS Module Connector; "...jumper 14 (CKT 530, LG/Y)to 21 (CKT 519 (LG/BK) & 39 (CKT 491 (O/LB)to 22 (CKT 523, R/PK)..."

...UPDATE: The long and winding road to repairing the ABS system took a big leap yesterday with install of the 4WABS HCU picked from a 60k mile '96 donor Bronco. It's electric motor was bench tested first to ensure function; the old one was tested too and it has an open circuit. But the ABS light is still on so chasing down codes 41/42 front brake sensors and code 65 Acceleration Sensor. Did not get a code 11 (Control Module) even though these are known to go bad if the HCU fails. Fun and games!"

Confession time

I was running some nice big 35" BFG mudterrains on the back of the Bronco. The front just had stock. If some one would **** me off i would stomp on the brakes .... nothing gets someone's attention like the sound of big nasty tires roaring to a stop. It would literial have people ******* them selves.

My freaking ABS light comes on and off.

It just so happens that it was on when some punk pulled out in front of me. I thought I would let them roar a little for him. Well....... the next thing I know I'm doing a 360 in the middle of the 4 lane. This time i almost ****** myself.

When the light is on ... it doesn't affect anything while normal breaking. When you have to slam on the breaks ..... crazy thing will happen. just be aware.
