I really am happy with my 1987 Eddie Bauer Bronco which we bought 3 years ago from a neighbor for $100 and had to put almost $3000 to get it back on the road. It has gotten us up our icy half mile hill with 3 feet of snow on the ground. Now the A4LD 4WD Transmission is starting to show its age: ... slow to shift into reverse, hard shifts into gears, and no overdrive.

I have never rebuilt an automatic trans ( just 4 speeds) so I need a very good rebuild manual for this specific trans so I can see if I even want to get into it, and what special tools might be helpfull. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

With this rotten economy our income has gone down to just our SS retirement so we are looking for economy solutions. Thank you for any and all help with this project.

Personally, I've had friends try to rebuild them, but I think the thing to do is get a descent used one, or pull it out and have someone who knows about them rebiuld it. Not doubting your skills, just trying to save you some hassle

Being new to this forum I realize that I have put a Bronco II question in the full size Bronco section but don't know how to move it. I have sent a note to the moderator about this. My trade for the last 40 years has been as a patternmaker reading technical drawings from Boeing, Kenworth, McDonald Douglas etc. but this rebuild will be an education for me. I have been cruising the net last night till I went into "Transmission Overload". One thing that caught my eye was a $595 rebuilt A4LD transmission on eBay from a rebuilder in Arizona: "1stoptransmission" has anyone reading this done business with them? All the parts houses and transmission suppliers I have called are in the $1500 range for a rebuilt A4LD so do "You get what you pay for" "buyer beware" or has anyone been happy with their rebuild from them?
