i have two new problems any ideas what they could be...first one is its like the truck won't fire, and whats odd about this is it will fire right up drive it to work, fires up when i leave to come up, but then i it will sit in my driveway for about 20 minutes and i will wanna leave and it just turns like it won't fire no idea why, then finally it will start...and normally when it starts its quick to start barely turn the key and its running, so i am confused....also the starter seems to having issues, which is only noticeable on times when it doesn't wanan fire its like if you hold the key to long the starter just free spins, or certain spots of the starter it just spins, bad starter bad gears whats up with that any ideas, haven't had time to pull it out yet or money to purchase anything yet thats why kinda just dealing with it, also figured try to get some ideas before i attempt to do it myself any help would be awesome

You may have a touchy carb that floods easily when hot. Mine is that way when the engine is hot, so I have learned not to touch the gas peddle until the engine is cranking with the starter. Some times it will start without any peddle and other times, After I start cranking, I have to touch the peddle just slightly. If I make the mistake of touching the gas peddle first, (when the engine is hot), it will flood and then I have to use the old tried and true method of clearing it, (hold the peddle to the floor and crank until it starts).

Sounds like you are hot on the trail of the starter problem.

Good luck,

:)>-

Sounds like part of it is a bad starter. As has been noted before, whoever's rebuilding most of the starters sold today has a drunk for a Quality Control engineer. I've replaced 3 in the last month and damn if the one I have in there now doesn't have a bad bendix drive & is refusing to throw out the throwout gear. Fortunately (and I use that word loosely) the freaking thing has a lifetime guarantee so they're going to replace as many of them as it takes for me to get a good one. Having them test the new one before you leave the store is a good idea but no real insurance since the last two that I put in tested fine in the store & the failed within a couple days of use. This time I'm going to have them test it several times before I accept it.

I have the same problem as you Seabronc. My 79 302 with a 600cfm Edelbrock will start fine when cold, but when its warm and it sets about 10 minutes it likes to flood out and causes it to be hard to start and blacksmoke at startup. Sometimes you have to barely touch the gas, and sometimes times you dont. Once in a blue moon I have to do the ole pedal to the floor trick also. I guess I should have took the carb back when I got it, but now its to late and the warranty is out. I originally had a 750cfm double pumper holley on my 302 put it started idling bad, I guess I shoulda just gave it a cleaning and a rebuild instead of buying a new carb. With the Holley it cranked just fine when hot.

a 750 dbl pumper on a 302 ? A *stock* 302 ? Sounds a bit excessive to me. I ran a 750 w/ *vacuum* secondaries on my 425HP 460 and it was plenty enuf for a full pull in *every* bog I ever entered (25+) . On a stock (or even fairly well modified) 302 I'd probably run a 600 w/vacuum secondaries (dbl pumpers are nice but not when you gotta drive to work <grin>). If you're comitted to the 750 I'd jet it WAY down and also install the smallest accelerator pump kit that Holley has.

It is bored .30 over with high compression pistons and chrome moly rings, 268 comp cam, edelbrock performer intake, plus all brand new parts when it was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. I know that is not alot of work done to it, but for some reason it sure loved that Holley 750. It doensnt run near as good now with the edelbrock 600 as it did with the 750 Holley. With the 750 it kicked way harder when you stomped the gas.
