I have a few questions about my bronco. For starters its a 1985 full size Eddie Bauer 302 auto.

(First) I had a HUGE problem with the fuel injection system.. soI got fed up and converted to carb.. I had to make a few custom parts for the Aod cable. My problem is its a crappy 2bbl intake and carb that aren't worth the metal they where molded/stamped with I was just short on funds and needed something. I was wondering If anyone knows any kind of conversion to add to an intake for the tranny cable, I would like to mount up a 4bbl intake and carb.. but afraid to attempt to break the welds on my cusom do-hicky..

(TWO) Hence the no longer needed computer for the injection system and all that mumbo, I was wondering if it would hurt if I yanked the underdash computer and remove most of the wiring mess?

(Third) My Driver side ball joint is *****.. can I replace that thing without removing the hub and all that? Its the split axle front end.. (please note: I do alot of mechanical work.. but was mostly on 2wd's and cars.. Never tore into a 4x4 before)

(fourth) Before I start yanking crap apart.. Would a steering column on any 80-92 bronco fit the wiring on my 85? I have a 1990 column in a wrecked mangled mess that IS salvagable... Just wondering if its worth the hassle?

This bronco is parked but I love it much. Its been parked for a while, I start it on a regular basis but never move it more that 30 feet. I want to bring this thing back to life. So I'm sure I'll have plenty of question.. please help if possible. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

ok, carbs are fully mechanical and most of the time dont need any electronics. any that exist are for emissions and electronic ignition. why did you yank the FI? major problems consist of bad sensors/ injectors. if the car still ran, the computer worked. mabey needed to have diag run but nothing major. anyway, i have a 86 with no computers other than the radio, digital clock and the ignition. that is it. as for the old computer you really dont need it. it controls functions of fuel injecton and mabey ignition system. you could try un plugging it and see if the truck still starts and functions properly. if not you might need to scounge up a carb wireing harness from a 351 or something. as for your tranny bracket things, if you made them once, you can make them again. who knows if you will ever be emissions legal again though.

You should be able to eliminate the computer. I would put in a Duraspark II ignition with harness from either a 83 302 or a 83 to 87 351. as far as emissions legal, I think you can forget it. If I understand most emissions laws correctly, you have to have what was originally on the engine and since you removed the EFI that is impossible. If they don't check that in your area, you could get within limits by building a vacuum harness that will support a 302 calibration. I happen to have a calibration chart for a 83 302 which use to be on my Bronco and could photograph it and attach it to a future post if you want. You will need a few non-computer controlled parts to build it though. They are not hard to build, I did it for my 85 351.

Good luck,

:)>-

Well as for yanking the efi system... I did it because the throttle body was cracked, upper manifold was cracked.. 3 injectors where leaking.. egr was rusted open.. o2 sensor was gone.. vaccum system was a mess... along with alot others... I might add that none of this was done by me it didn't run when I bought it.. those are just the things I was able to diagnose. I was just checking to see if the spark system was dependant on the computer.. If it is I've got a HEI all in one 2wire distro I can slap in.. which I may as well do anyways. The reason for wanting to go to 4bbl is the fact that the 3bbl on there I have they don't make a slosh kit for. Whereas I can attain a 4bbl intake and 700cfm carb with a kit on it fairly good price.. I just heard they had a bracket I could buy and bolt on rather than welding a custom mess on a fresh intake but was unable to locate one..

Oh any suggestions are fine if they aren't emission legal.. we dont test in my part of kentucky :D/

Well sounds like you are on the right track. Unless you have done something to increase displacement, 700 CFM is a little large for that engine. I have a 4160 600 CFM Holley on my stock 351 annd it s**ts and gets. With a 700 you will probably have to play with the secondaries to get them to open properly.

Good luck, :)>-

Anyone have any ideas on the 3rd and 4th questions? I really dont feel like pulling the hubs.. There is a seciont open on the ttb where it looks like i can get to the joint and pull it free.. but if it is impossible then im not even gonna try ill just pull the hubs.. also.. I wanted to know if i can do that before digging out the steel and boxing the ttb.

And the steering wheel.. would it be worth the effort to dig out the sawzall and sledge to get to the 90 f-150 steering column (3x rollover.. cab is kinda smushed)

Hubs and axles need to come out to change the ball joints. Check bigbroncos.com for a good tech write-up.

In reference to the steering column, I would say no beecause the turn signal switch changes part number.

Good :)>- luck,
