I have 1985 Ford Bronco. There is something wrong with my a/c compressor. Does anybody know if there is a way to tell if a compressor is bad or not. I don't know if there is any freon in it or not. I need some help with this because I know nothing about them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks alot.

I'll bet that the refrigerant is R-12, its VERY expensive, you could get a conversion kit to run R-134a. Do not under any circumstance take that compressor apart, if you don't know what you are doing, you could run the risk of blowing high pressure freon everywhere.

yo!

first check is the ac compressor; does it engage when you turn AC on?

the test is to have someone turn AC on while you watch the compressor's clutch to see if it engages..

You can see this by looking at the clutch hub (front plate). The hub is the piece on the front of the compressor that is connected to the shaft.

If the compressor does not run, check to see if the clutch is getting 12vdc and that it has a good ground.

If it is not getting power disconnect connector & give it 12v to see if it will works; if it does work w/temp 12vdc applied, then we need to ts the wiring from this connector back to the switch

if it all works, have refrig, checked; buy a cheapo test kit to diy or get it done.

get back here w/the engagement answer and we'll go on from there;

For now, here is Troubleshooting Guide, Air Conditioning, general by polarbearinc.com

then if you think it needs a recharge buy locally; a shop will ruin your wallet; unless you can get a good price on a recharge or conversion.

and assuming you still have a freon system, you can convert to new stuff R134a

or NAPA, etc.
